If you’re burned out and tired from using AI, you’re spreading yourself too thin. Your brain isn’t made to juggle ten different context windows at once especially when each of them contains challenging work. Moving back to one thread at a time has led to me shipping so much more.

Software engineering is dead is called by people who never maintained anything.

Why would I pay $15/month for your software when I can plan, build, review, improve, host, launch, scale, secure, patch, monitor and debug it myself?

it’s kind of insane how much AI agents love nullables
every nullable doubles the number of states your code can be in. a constructor with 10 nullables → +1,000 possible combinations
each one is a path you’d have to reason about and test. 👎🏻

Agreed that a large volume of code before AI was slop. But I don't think that's the main point.
The main problem is that before AI, slop was being generated at human scale and it could be contained/controlled through management.
Now, AI causes several problems:
1- An AI coding agent can generate more slop in a day than a human would in their entire lifetime
2- A lot of people are entering software development jobs who have near-zero knowledge of code, and they are shipping AI-generated code to production. So now we have more people generating slop at the scale of AI
3- There is immense pressure on software companies to ship more code to avoid falling behind, so they don't have time to develop the mechanisms to control the quality of AI-generated code (including with the help of AI code review tools)

More true now than ever.

In programming, you always need to understand at least one level of abstraction below the one that you’re working at to become really good at your craft. AI is no different.
In the age of low-level programming languages (e.g., C/C++), if you knew computer architecture, memory management, OS modules, etc.), you would be much better than the average programmer.
In the age of AI coding agents, knowing software architecture, design patterns, etc., makes you much better at agentic engineering than the average vibe coder who speaks in vague prompts.
