Update: Mayor John Whitmire now says the city will withdraw the application, in part because "staff prematurely submitted" it before seeking approval from Houston City Council.
Scoop: Houston quietly submitted for a $150m DOJ grant last month, unbeknownst to city council members and residents who have raised concerns that it might force closer cooperation w/ ICE. @HoustonChron houstonchronicle.com/politic…

Jalen Hurts wasn’t perfect yesterday in Tennessee, but when the moment demanded it, he was DANG GOOD.
That final drive by the @Eagles was a thing of beauty, and their Super Bowl MVP quarterback delivered when it mattered most.
I couldn’t wait to break down every throw, play by play. That’s “What Kept Me Up Last Night.” And there was no way I was doing anything else before getting to this one today.

So they founded a NEW newspaper to fight disinformation from the Trump regime.

Sam has always been a gift to Houston readers and a beloved former colleague so I’m super stoked to see him continue to elevate his coverage. He’s the right guy for this moment. Congrats friend 🥳
Happy to share that I’m now covering politics at the Chronicle. I’ll be focusing on Houston’s state and federal lawmakers, and how what happens in Austin and DC affects all of us here at home. Excited to get started!

I’ve seen countless headlines about the incident with Clark and the official and the no call. Gotten notifications and everything.
I’ve seen less than 3 headlines about the Valkyries being on an incredible 8 game win streak.
The focus is not where it should be. And that’s the problem.

As a Black man working every day to build a New Black South, I understand why the people of Memphis felt slighted by recent comments from athletes.
What we’re seeing in Memphis isn’t unique. It’s the same reality in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Atlanta, Jackson, Houston—and places folks don’t always name like Montgomery, St. Louis, Shreveport, and many more.
Too often, majority-Black cities in the South are being undermined by Republican leadership at the state level. That’s not opinion—that’s pattern.
And if you’re not willing to invest in the Deep South, it doesn’t help to discourage others from investing in our communities either. That needs to be said plainly.
Entertainers and athletes have the power to shift conversations in ways local leaders often can’t. With that comes responsibility.
My hope is that moments like this don’t divide us—but bring us to more tables, with more clarity, to fight for the progress our people deserve. Accountability is not an attack.
If you’re from the south and you agree, comment your city.

Tears found Cynthia Cooper-Dyke’s eyes when she went to the free-throw line and Houston Comets fans showered with their love and chants of “M-V-P”.
The memory still resonates for the former superstar guard, who fondly recalled the raucous atmosphere at Comets games.
Cooper-Dyke said she jumped out of her chair when first hearing the news and called her former teammates, who shared the glee. bit.ly/3O1LA4p
