Are you interested in working on cutting-edge high performance distributed systems? @dmazieres and I need a few more engineers to join our small team. We need all sorts of help -- c++/rust, typescript , smart contracts, ops, cryptography, and more. DM me if this sounds exciting!

AI code assistants can be super useful, but *please* don't YOLO your file system! These tools have been known to wipe entire drives. I'm excited to release a near-effortless way to reduce the blast radius: jai.scs.stanford.edu/

Models I've checked out in the past month or so as I try to learn some of this stuff: • redpajama-7b • falcon-7b • replit-code-3b • mpt-7b • flan-t5-large up to flan-t5-xxl Any others? I'm largely just looking at approaches, supporting tooling, docs, etc.

"it's a miracle any of this works at all" <-- something I find myself saying on a daily basis.. 😆

1/22 This is Svetlana Maniovich. She is your guide to the world of extreme Russian glamour. She radiates richness. Diamonds, furs, Rolls Royces - she has it all and more. In summer you can find her in St Tropez where she rents a villa for €150k/month, or on a yacht in Naples🧵

If Apple wants to show regulators that the App Store is a safe and trusted environment to warrant its monopoly on software on iPhone, this kind of stuff shouldn’t exist — let alone be topping the App Store charts. As a developer this makes me both mad and really sad.

These headphones are now 30 years old and aside from $15 foam pads every year or two and having to re-solder a wire once, they have been flawless, and I’m pretty sure could be the most used object I’ve ever owned. #photo #headphones #grado

Mastodon is feeling more and more to me like the armed rebellion of hackers that accelerated Linux and Firefox. There are lots of challenges with the protocol, implementation, UX, etc.. But when you start with a rebel alliance of hackers, code problems are jet fuel not friction.

Feels predictable that every one of these dreambooth-based generative AI sites built in a week by the valley bro industrial complex (😂) would almost immediately become soft porn sites, no?

I think the funniest thing about this is that messing around with ADS-B data is like the nerdiest of nerd traditions, practically a rite of passage for every college aged hacker.. ultra hardcore embarrassing.

Of all the optimistic 00s era takes, "AI will think logically from first principles so it will be free from human biases" has probably died the hardest.
Interesting. The AI totally fails the cognitive reflection test. It gives the intuitive but incorrect answer every time.

Enjoyed the discord experience @steveklabnik put together for the @oxidecomputer podcast recording yesterday with @bcantrill, @ahl, tbray and guests. I remain federation skeptical, future curious, but find me @[email protected] (2017 era mastodon.social remains unused).

Canada has extended copyright for life of author plus 70 - and as a result, not a single work will automatically enter the public domain in Canada for the next 20 years. internetarchivecanada.org/20…

💯 -- also "unique voice" as everything likely goes even more monoculture, I think, in the way that TV made everywhere sort of California.
I hope that as developments in AI automate basic writing and image-making tasks -- it pushes humanity to develop higher order creative and conceptual skills Imagination will become the scarce resource
