For the last ten months, @zachkurtz12 and I have been building out Agentiq Sports. Today, we’re out of stealth. @FOS covered the launch with a skeptical headline: "Another Startup Is Trying to Sell Shares in Athletes’ Future Earnings." They are right to be skeptical. Here is why it’s different this time. 🧵👇 frontofficesports.com/articl…

One of the things I love most about venture is supporting companies that make you stop and say: "Wait, that's possible?" That's how I felt when I first chatted with @zachkurtz12 & @ReubsAbraham about @AgentiqSports. Today, they're launching a bold vision: giving fans the opportunity to invest in a portion of athletes' future earnings through SEC-regulated offerings. The sports industry is massive. Fans spend billions every year following athletes, teams, and leagues. Yet for all of that engagement, there have been very few ways for fans to directly participate in the upside created by the athletes they believe in. Agentiq is reimagining what ownership and participation can look like in sports. What excites me most isn't just the specific product. It's the broader shift it represents. We're increasingly seeing technology unlock entirely new asset classes and investment opportunities that previously weren't accessible to everyday investors. Sports feels like one of the most compelling and culturally relevant categories where that transformation can happen. The best startups don't just improve an existing workflow. They create something that previously didn't exist. That's an ambitious goal, and exactly the kind of idea we love to support @defyvc. Huge congratulations to Zach, Reuben, and the entire Agentiq team on today's launch! 🚀🚀🚀
Today we're officially live. Front Office Sports just covered our launch and we’re now letting fans participate in professional athletes' careers through regulated offerings. The sports industry has spent years monetizing fans through betting apps, prediction markets, and daily fantasy. 95-97% of sports bettors lose money. 84% of Polymarket traders are in the red. $17 billion was extracted from American consumers by sportsbooks in 2025 alone. Agentiq is the opposite of that without a house edge and a real economic interest in the athletes you believe in. Our roster is anchored by Justin Martinez, a 25-year-old flamethrowing closer of the Diamondbacks, Hunter Dobbins, the Cardinals up-and-coming starting pitcher and Esmerlyn Valdez, the 22-year-old Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder who has emerged as one of the most electric rookies in the MLB this season. Backed by a $4M seed round led by defy.vc and a group of industry heavy hitters who own two major European football clubs. We're just getting started.

Physical AI feels like one of the most important technology shifts of the next decade. Yet it's surprisingly difficult to talk about because the category gets used to describe everything from humanoids and autonomous vehicles to simulation software and foundation models. Over the last few months, Noah Lin and I mapped 250+ companies and built a framework for understanding the ecosystem. The question isn't really whether Physical AI happens. The question is where value accrues. Will it be the foundation models? The simulation layer? Deployment and observability tooling? Full-stack robotics companies? Vertical applications? Full market map + writeup in comments.

Standard Metrics (@metrics_co) has raised a $20M Series B led by 8VC (@8vc) to accelerate innovation in the private markets! Trillions of dollars of economic activity in the private markets still run on spreadsheets, email threads, and PDFs. This critical ecosystem remains surprisingly analog and inefficient despite financing many of the world’s most innovative companies. This problem matters. A better-functioning innovation economy would lead to new big technological breakthroughs, life-saving medicines, jobs, and game-changing new products. AI expands both the urgency and the scope of this opportunity. New AI models have fundamentally changed how data can be organized, analyzed, and acted upon, and they are beginning to drive rapid software adoption in an industry that has historically lagged behind. We believe AI-native infrastructure will reshape the private markets over the coming decade. Two years ago, we bet our company on the idea of building the AI-native portfolio management platform for venture capital and private equity. That was the single most consequential decision in our history: it led us to create the first MCP server in our space, launch an AI-driven document processing service, and build cutting-edge agentic reporting and analytics tools. Today, we’re proud to support more than 150 investment firms who collectively manage over $400B, along with more than 10,000 of their portfolio companies. 30% of the Forbes Midas List are customers of Standard Metrics. But we’ve still only scratched the surface: we work with roughly 1% of active global VC/PE firms. We’ve raised roughly $50M to date. Most of that capital has come from our customers. Investors in this round alongside 8VC include Salesforce Ventures, Spark Capital, January Capital, First Trust Capital Partners, Socii Capital, Kindergarten Ventures, Calm Ventures, Gaingels, and more. It’s been an honor to partner with some of the world’s most forward-thinking investors on this journey. Thank you so much to our team, customers, investors, and supporters. We’re just getting started!

One of the more interesting things happening in vertical AI right now isn't the technology itself. It's the return of old-school sales. For the last decade, software companies optimized around relatively small ACVs. The playbook was PLG, SDRs, content, and efficient digital distribution. But many vertical AI companies aren't selling software budgets. They're selling labor replacement. When customers are underwriting ROI against headcount spend instead of software spend, ACVs jump from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands (or more). That changes the math. Suddenly, in-person meetings make sense again. Conferences become high-ROI channels. Dedicated AEs become economically rational much earlier. Entirely new distribution channels open up. Two channels we've seen work particularly well: • PE firms and portfolio networks, where one successful deployment can spread across multiple companies. • Industry conferences, where buyers are actively trying to figure out their AI strategy and are open to evaluating new vendors. The vertical AI companies pulling away right now aren't just building great products. They're recognizing that bigger ACVs require a different GTM playbook than the SaaS era. AI may be creating a new category of software, but it's also bringing direct sales back. Thanks to @crunchbase for sharing my POV. See the full post linked in comments👇 cc: @defyvc

Thrilled to share that @champ_hq AI is officially out of stealth with $8.5M in funding! 🎉 We @defyvc have had the privilege of working with @jputrevu, @HeyTedC, and @ptrln since they were hardening their thesis on day -1 and I couldn't be more excited about what's ahead. These three spent nearly a decade together scaling @Instacart from Series B to IPO — building AI systems that powered over a million daily orders across 4,000+ retailers. They know what it takes to operationalize AI at enterprise scale, and they're bringing that same playbook to fix one of the most painful, overlooked problems in business: operations work that's still stuck in the past. The opportunity they're going after is massive. LLMs have fundamentally changed what can be automated — but most enterprises are still stuck between wanting to adopt AI and actually knowing how to execute it. Champ bridges that gap with a single platform that handles browser workflows, document processing, and phone calls end-to-end, while helping teams discover where automation will have the most impact in the first place. That last piece matters more than people realize. The highest-ROI automation opportunities are rarely obvious — and Champ surfaces them automatically. So proud of this team and so excited for what's ahead. This is just the beginning. 🚀

Most AI startups over-optimize pre-sales GTM. The real failure point is after the contract is signed. Buying ≠ adopting. @nxh_lxn and I write about what we are seeing @defy_vc in Post-Sales GTM — and why renewals, expansion, and real value aren’t automatic in AI. The takeaway: AI products don’t fail because the tech is bad. They fail because onboarding, expectations, and customer pull aren’t managed with discipline. If you’re building AI: • Onboarding = behavior change, not feature tours • Expectations must be framed as progress, not magic • Customer input ≠ roadmap ownership Post-sales isn’t support. It’s where AI companies compound — or quietly churn. 👇 Full post in comments

We learned this week that Aumni (@getaumni) by J.P. Morgan is being discontinued. Aumni was an early pioneer in the VC software space, and we have deep respect for what their team built. We’re wishing everyone there the best as they navigate this transition. We understand that this change may create stress for portfolio operations and finance teams who rely on Aumni for consistent access to portfolio data, especially with Q4 close and audits approaching. Per Aumni’s customer communication, portfolio data processing will end in mid-January, and the platform will shut down at the end of March. We've been in touch with many Aumni customers and team members over the past couple of days, and it's been wonderful to see the community come together and support each other. If you’ve been affected in any way and are evaluating continuity options, whether with Standard Metrics (@metrics_co) or elsewhere, our team is here to help however we can. Please feel free to reach out to me or anyone at Standard Metrics.

🚀 Excited to share that @defyvc is leading the $3.5M seed for Interface, an AI platform transforming industrial safety + compliance — one of the most complex, high-stakes problems in heavy industry.Industrial operators rely on millions of pages of SOPs, technical manuals, and regulatory documents. Auditing them manually is slow, expensive, and often impossible to do comprehensively. Mistakes don’t just cost money — they cost lives. Interface’s AI “safety copilot” changes that. It’s already 10× faster and 4× cheaper than traditional review, and is being piloted today with some of the world’s largest oil & gas companies. This is AI enabling workflows that simply weren’t possible before. What made us lean in quickly was the founder–market fit, captured so well in @Cookie's @TechCrunch profile (linked below). CEO, @thomasleeyoung, grew up in Trinidad & Tobago around rigs, saw the impact of safety failures firsthand, and later worked in human factors engineering at Jaguar Land Rover. His co-founder, Aaryan Mehta, brings deep technical expertise — AI + Math from Imperial College London, and ML pipeline + fault-detection work at Amazon. Together, they have a rare combination of domain depth + AI rigor that this category demands and this is the right product at exactly the right moment. Thrilled to partner alongside @PrecursorVC, @RockYardVC, and exceptional angels on this journey — and grateful to @Cookie + @TechCrunch for telling the founders’ stories with such nuance. Thomas + Aaryan — we’re all in. Heavy industry needs what you’re building. This is only the beginning. 🚀

I’ve always believed the best founder–VC relationships start before the pitch. Years before investing in @noviconnect, I worked with its founder @kimberly_shenk at Eventbrite — she led data science, I led growth. That trust built in the trenches made backing her next company, Novi, feel full circle. Novi is the trusted data layer helping brands win in the AI-driven commerce era. We talked about how AI is becoming the new search interface — and what it means for brands to be found by machines, not people. 🎥 Marketing to Machines: How AI Shopping Is Changing SEO, Trust & Brand Growth YouTube: youtube.com/watch?app=deskto… Apple: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas… Spotify: open.spotify.com/episode/3aU… Thanks @VCFMpodcast for hosting! cc @defyvc
