People have been taking empty milk jugs to the gas station to see how much gas they’re actually getting for a gallon’s worth. The results are not good.

The basic theory: allowing existing utilities to continue to vertically control all the means of production and delivery of electricity, and enjoy a guarantee of cost recovery in customer rates, would allow them to crowd out competitors and smother competition in the crib. 2/

Third-party demand response provider @voltusinc and @mission_data say utility barriers to accessing smart meter data are blocking gigawatts of grid relief in PJM, the biggest U.S. energy market — and they're asking regulators to step in: canarymedia.com/articles/uti…

A big problem in the Texas electricity market: Residential customers can do exactly the same thing in terms of reducing their demand as industrial customers but not reap the same reward. @OctopusEnergyUS @teslaenergy @GotRhythmHQ & @basepowerco team up today to propose a reform:

If you have a battery, there are other ways to handle it. Also ways that would make it undetectable. Frankly, the utilities should be broadcasting your consumption with those fancy meters we taxpayers and ratepayers paid for with the promise that they would open up comms.

Meanwhile, California regulators vote to let San Diego Gas & Electric cease giving customers real-time power usage information, meaning that customers can't easily adjust how they use power. docs.cpuc.ca.gov/PublishedDo…

Remember all those nifty smart meters subsidized by the Obama administration? Utilities won't let customers have access to their own power usage data, so they can't band together to cut usage and reduce the amount of power generating equipment needed. missiondata.io/news/2025/10/…

we have the receipts! In ComEd alone over 90% of residential ratepayers are blocked from VPP participation because of data barriers. Widespread expansion of utility data access may be the #1 biggest boon for addressing the capacity shortfall in these coming years
Today, @voltusinc and Mission:data filed a complaint against PJM at FERC for data barriers that are unjust, unreasonable and discriminatory. To sum up: PJM requires smart meter data, but utilities do not provide it. This complaint has the receipts! 🧵(1)

“We need to move from demand side as a regulatory paradigm to demand side as a market paradigm.” That line from Andy Frank perfectly captures where the conversation needs to go. Too many programs, including Texas' energy efficiency programs and ERCOT’s proposed residential DR program, are overly regulatory with fixed prices rather than market-based competition and price discovery. It's Lynne Kiesling's (and Hayek's) “knowledge problem”: no central planner has perfect information. Price signals solve the knowledge problem. That’s why competitive, market-based demand-side flexibility is potentially the killer app for reliability, resiliency, affordability, and sustainability. WattCarbon lays it out clearly: “Our current energy systems are sized for the hottest day of the year. Outside of that, the grid is underutilized. What we really need is to shift current peak load to non-peak times.” In Texas, I’d amend that to: “outside of really cold nights and hot evenings," the grid is underutilized. In Texas, solar has alleviated problems during the traditional 4–5 p.m. peak, but the principle remains. There are times of scarcity and, whenever those occur depending on region, climate, etc., and regardless of market structure, demand flexibility can scale to help meet the needs. CHART OF THE DAY: Every year, the seasonal peak in atmospheric CO2 concentration in the northern hemisphere is set in May. For the first time, that seasonal peak surpassed 430ppm at the Mauna Loa Observatory on Hawaii, which has tracked CO2 since 1958. scripps.ucsd.edu/news/annual…

It’s amazing what can be accomplished with a clear price signal and access to data.
3GW of load just peaced out of ERCOT's load forecast. A lot of that is behind-the-meter resources. Visibility matters.

We are constantly dealing with one problem after another in regard to bad data, late data, no data The effects on any product or innovation that tries to activate the demand side of the power market are profound. No definitive account of this I'm aware of, but there should be!
Has anyone written a definitive account of all the problems that result from utilities not providing billing-quality usage data to suppliers, aggregators, etc.? Looking for descriptions of the range of chaos that results.
