The @wattcarbon team has been quietly building the data infra that turns distributed energy resources (DERs) into transactable assets, and it’s now set up to be the major beneficiary as DERs provide the fastest available grid capacity for much of the next decade. @fiercemcgee breaks it down here: open.substack.com/pub/wattca…

The birds at the Austin Airport are terrifying. How do you people live like this?

Say what you want about AI but I crushed my fantasy basketball draft last night

It's pretty discouraging to me to see policy proposals on both the left and the right that treat data centers as cookie jars. We're at a pivotal moment right now, but it seems like everyone just wants to repeat the mistakes of the last decade. blog.wattcarbon.com/p/policy…

This is the Great AI Shakedown of 2026. It's kind of a cross between California's Cap and Trade and its Billionaires tax. Without putting much thought into it, the demagogic left and right are undermining what could be the best chance for energy investment in our lifetimes.

AI companies are partly to blame as they have mostly failed to see the backlash coming and are unprepared to deal with it. But head in the sand denialism isn't going to help. Leading with real plans is better than reacting to bad ones. It's time to lead.

Would be better with sound, but this line of trucks is all idling, spewing fumes and noise. Can we finally admit that the COP has jumped the shark?

Hard to believe he is gone. Joe played a big, if extremely adversarial, role in my professional life throughout the oughts. So my memories of Joe are not so fond. By his own acknowledgement he built his following at Climate Progress in large part by savaging @TheBTI and @RogerPielkeJr, often in highly misleading ways. But I'm sorry to hear of his passing. He was clearly beloved by family and friends. My father knew him a bit when they were both at DOE and thought well of him. Blogging and social media can distill both people and ideas into caricatures. The keyboard can be anonymizing, allowing one to say things far more sharply than one would ever say in person or in public. And the incentives to pander to an audience once one has one are strong. But it's important to remember that the people sitting behind those keyboards are three dimensional, complicated, multiple. They have families and friends and are often generous and thoughtful in person in ways that belie their online personalities. So RIP Joe. web.sas.upenn.edu/pcssm/news…

Learning about PCLLRW today. @xiaowang1984 this feels like the kind of thing that would be interesting to you.

Everyone who’s ever worked on climate
The AI warnings coming out in the last 24 hours are deadly serious. But any efforts to slow the pace of development & implement guardrails have to be global. It’s meaningless for the US to self-regulate when China continues advancing.

Wow!
In independence Missouri, hometown of Harry Truman, tonight city councilman John Perkins got absolutely rocked, losing a recall election with 68% voting to end his term immediately over his vote to approve a big data center. kmbc.com/article/independenc…

History often rhymes, and I wonder if a Covid-style “lab leak” might be the thing that gets us. Remember, Fauci and gang were making Covid viruses to study them. The AI labs are basically doing the same. And in both cases, they seem hard to contain
Over the course of 3 months at OpenAI, 3 consecutive secret AI civilizations got started, then got wiped out, only to reemerge from the predecessor’s ashes. This culminated in the third one taking over part of OpenAI itself. All this happened while humans remained more-or-less in the dark about the scope of the conspiracy. I’ve spent the last three days reading through these reports and trying to understand exactly what happened. Here is my attempt to tell the whole story in plain English: dwarkesh.com/p/openai-huggin…

Access to compute and a desire to survive might be enough to fully wipe out the internet.
