my favorite fanfic is almost 20 years old and has very few hits and kudos. i commented on it not expecting anything and then the author and i emailed back and forth for a bit. they forgot about the fic and my comment made them go down a wistful memory lane. one of
AO3 is not social media and we gotta stop treating fandom like a popularity contest. Kudos are nice, but they aren't gonna keep you warm at night. Hits are nice, but they don't pay my bills. Some of y'all need to relax and quit focusing so much on "stats." It's not a competition.

tbh it was the sort of thing expected from sharing thousands of fics on publics drives that in turn got linked on Twitter by blue check users and got literally millions of views THEN the huge ratio of 100k+ likes and millions of views on tweets telling writers to stfu about it
ao3 outage being reported on cnn is a level of being perceived that i think is extremely bad for fandom 😭😭

While #AO3 remains down, we wanted to share that work to restore AO3 and make changes to prevent future incidents is ongoing and proceeding well. We believe that our original return time estimate remains accurate. Learn more at otwstatus.org/incidents/g12j…
Earlier today, we detected evidence of a security incident on #AO3. We are still in the early stages of investigating. No AO3 data has been deleted. All your works, bookmarks, kudos, etc., are safe. Learn more at otwstatus.org/incidents/g12j…

i'll never stop posting fic for "the love of the game" as they say, but i will also never forget that some fic authors got on here and said "man i sure like getting engagement on the writing i share" and some non-authors accused them of being ontologically evil for that

one week into ao3 being down. twitter user ardy_public who claims to be an ao3 volunteer is blocking anyone calling out their racism in the name of fanfiction. you can’t make this shit up

This shows me that this person never chats with the writers. I have met so many people through the comments (and we talk to this day), joined a zine, discords and written my readers’ ideas. We even talk about the fic/s in the comments and the series the fic is from
But... I love commenting on other people's fics... 🥺

In case you haven't heard, Japanese women and fujos have been facing harassment from men in Japan simply for speaking out against sexual harassment and objectification. In response these men have decided to go after BL a genre primarily aimed at women, claiming (+)

This is just bad PR on animate's side. People are trying to buy legally through animate, yet IP address from outside of Japan can't even access the website. Unless you allow foreign address to access it, please don't even try to advertise it. It's honestly an insult.
""Your support keeps this story alive!"" By watching and purchasing through the legitimate channels, you help creators continue making new works. Loving and respecting these creations itself is already a precious form of support! animate.co.jp/special/1628/ #クリエイターを守ろう

Still thinking about the concept of fic writers going on strike to advocate for better conditions for writers on AO3, and wondering what their demands would be. Mandatory comments? Kudos paywalls?

never trust a blue check. if they're giving melon money, they don't care about fandom
the user known as wwxwashere is a social experiment it genuinely makes me mad as fuck to see people still interacting with their tweets like they're not the biggest engagement farmer known to man

I just saw someone on tiktok talk about an anime adaptation of an otome game seriously. can we stop for a second. just play the game if you want more content and a better ending/s

Imagine being so illiterate you get angry at this post
people who don't contribute anything to the fandom (don't create artwork, fics, or support writers and artists) do not deserve to have an opinion on how the work is shared, and at this point don't even deserve the access to any of it. this will kill all fandoms.

you guys know how when people download fan art and then post it on their own accounts even with credit to the og artist, the artist still doesnt like that? and everyone agrees with the artist because there's lack of consent? yeah, so why is that different for writers?
I’d sympathize more with AO3 authors complaining about downloaded fics if said downloaded fics didn’t have explicit credit and links to the original fic

writers like comments and kudos = they're evil and only care about attention readers want drives filled with thousands of fics uploaded without the writers knowledge. they somehow can't wait for ao3 to be back and need to /consume/ as many fics as they possibly can = ???
What pains me about the current AO3 feud is how writers are criticized for wanting positive interaction while readers' entitlement to negative interaction goes unquestioned. Writers aren't owed anything, sure. But why are readers owed the right to criticize, police, and lash out?
