You’re missing something pretty fundamental here: the only reason professional sports are a viable career in the first place is because millions of ordinary people are willing to spend their hard-earned money watching you play it. Those overweight, unathletic, uncoordinated fans you’re mocking? They’re the customers. They buy the tickets, jerseys, concessions, and streaming subscriptions. They’re the audience advertisers pay to reach. Their money is what makes your extraordinary athletic ability commercially valuable. Without them, you’re just a dude who’s good at hitting and throwing a ball. Nobody disputes the talent, discipline, or sacrifice required to reach the NFL or NBA or MLB level. But being among the best athletes on Earth doesn’t make you immune from criticism by the people financing the entire enterprise. A fan doesn’t need to hit a 95 mph fastball to recognize a terrible at-bat, any more than a restaurant customer needs to be a Michelin-starred chef to recognize a lousy meal. Professional athletes don’t have careers because they’re exceptionally talented at their sport. They have careers because people are willing to pay to watch that talent play. Fans get emotionally attached to their teams and players. And that attachment is what keeps them coming back, and keeps making it possible for the people who work hard to develop their talent to keep playing. You might want to show a little more respect for the people who made your livelihood possible. They don’t owe you applause simply because you can do something they can’t.
