For three sessions, I have served on the Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC), & I am now the ranking Dem on it. Not many ppl know what the JLAC does, so as I reflect back on my time in the Legislature, I thought it worthwhile to explain this little-known but important body.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the JLAC has at times been used partisanly by Legislative Republicans to further their agenda over the years I’ve been here. Auditing government should be about accountability, not about going after the public services Wisconsinites rely on.
My first session in the Legislature, I served on the Assembly Committee on Small Business Development. It didn’t take long to see that while Wisconsin’s small businesses are important to our communities, not every entrepreneur has had the same opportunity to succeed.
Every policy we debate here in the legislature represents real people. It’s not enough to just speak to what we need; we also have to build towards our hopes and dreams, no matter how impossible they seem.
This Lake Appreciation Month, I’m thinking about the work that needs to happen both in the water and at the Capitol. Protecting Wisconsin’s lakes means investing in clean energy and policies that protect the natural resources we all depend on.

Wisconsinites deserve a clean environment, healthy communities, and easy access to the ballot. This session I voted for a sustainable healthy environment and scored 100 percent in Wisconsin Conservation Voters’ Conservation Scorecard!
Four years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, rolling back our constitutional rights. While abortion is legal in Wisconsin today, access remains vulnerable without permanent protection in state law.
