We are seeing a growing prominence and even mainstream acceptance of counter-vaccine narratives during and after the pandemic. Why? From my perspective, several factors converged during the pandemic to deepen public distrust and disillusionment toward public-health leaders and the medical establishment. That erosion of trust created fertile ground for contrarian ideas to take hold and spread. In this environment, a wide range of organizations and individuals, some implicitly critical of vaccines, others explicitly committed to negative vaccine narratives, emerged or expanded their influence. Their interests became aligned, and their messaging reinforced one another, enabling these narratives to gain visibility, coherence, and momentum. These groups include: 1. Organizations with overt anti-vaccine agendas, such as Children’s Health Defense, the Informed Consent Action Network, and to some extent the National Vaccine Information Center, have been around for years, but saw dramatic increases in funding (up to 8–20×), activity, and influence during the pandemic. 2. Alternative-medicine and wellness companies and influencers, whose business models are naturally aligned against mainstream medicine, vaccines included. During the pandemic, many began promoting and selling COVID-related “treatments” and alleged vaccine-injury remedies, giving them a direct financial stake in counter-vaccine narratives. Groups like Mercola .com, America’s Frontline Doctors, the Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance, Leading Edge Clinic, the McCullough Foundation, and The Wellness Company all either were formed or expanded substantially during this period. 3. New contrarian influencers monetizing Substack, YouTube, podcasts, and other platforms, who gained substantial income, visibility, and influence. Unlike traditional scientific communication, contrarianism, particularly anti-vaccine contrarianism, can be extremely profitable to individuals. This creates strong incentives not only to craft and amplify such narratives, but also to produce a steady stream of material to keep followers engaged and subscribed. These messages are then frequently shared, echoed, and reinforced across the broader network. 4. The mainstreaming of many of these narratives within conservative political culture in the U.S. and elsewhere. Influential right-leaning media figures, from Joe Rogan, Tucker Carlson, and Alex Jones to Dr. Drew, Lara Logan, Liz Churchill, Stew Peters, and others, have actively promoted these themes to large audiences. 5. Political developments in the U.S., including Trump’s election, the appointment of RFK to lead HHS, and the creation of MAHA, have further legitimized and empowered this movement. Many current national public-health leaders hold contrarian views to varying degrees, with some expressing outright anti-vaccine sentiment, bringing federal visibility, funding, and authority to these ideas. Conflicts over lockdowns and mandates during the pandemic fueled skepticism and distrust toward public health institutions and mainstream medicine, increasing public receptivity to those promoting counter-vaccine narratives. At the same time, online moderation of contrarian content, including removal of some prominent contrarian voices from mainstream social media platforms (i.e. "censorship"), galvanized these groups, motivating them to coordinate more closely and intensify the amplification of their messages. The result is a highly organized and integrated network that has become remarkably effective at disseminating counter-vaccine narratives. At present, this coalition is more organized, more motivated, and more adept at messaging than the scientific and public-health community. That asymmetry gives it a significant advantage in shaping public opinion, particularly among individuals who are politically aligned with these narratives or whose personal pandemic experiences make such messages feel persuasive.
