How you deal with when life beats you down is as important as how you handle winning. You need to be able to handle both the highs and the lows. Don't worry, I used to suck at both! It is so easy to get carried away when we are up, and it is hard to keep going when everything goes against us. Being able to rebalance ourselves quickly is a superpower. Let not emotions run away with you. All strong feelings are as treacherous as they are addictive. Our biggest addiction is not to a substance but to our feelings; the way out of it is to not act on them. I see so many developers let their feelings run away with them. They lash out or get defensive. On the other side is becoming an extraordinary colleague who always seeks what is best for the business. Steel yourself and train yourself not to act on your initial feelings. Ask yourself: is this really true, or could there be some other reason? There are plenty of guides on how to approach this. Find one that resonates with you and go all in. Life on the other side is blissful!

Pgbus now has support for one of the most frustrating things I have ever had to handle. OneOff jobs that need to run after a deployment is done. pgbus.zoolutions.llc/docs/de… Pgbus waits until all new containers are up and running and then schedules the job. It isn't so much for data migration as it is for things that call other services etc. But... the number of rake tasks I have forgotten to run and then spent hours debugging why it isn't working is not amazing and very wasteful. Now, pgbus will run those for you and you can scrap the rake tasks. This way, there is also a trace of that something was run without having to query 10 different tables why something doesn't look the way you intended it to.

The only animal in Scandinavia that terrifies me... I have seen plenty of the Swedish ones grow to 300kg. Saw a car hit one once, there was nothing left of the engine. It left a hole where the engine should be and the car went from whatever speed to a complete halt in no-time. Be careful out there, even a 120 kg one will fk you up! They run fast too, you wouldn't believe how fast they are when they charge you and good luck climbing a tree in seconds. They get up to almost 50km/h which is faster than the average elite bicyclist over an entire race. They attack in packs, and are super protective of their young ones and they always have young ones around to protect 🤣 Elk, bear, wolves etc tend to stay clear of humans but these fkrs are always around humans. Always right around the corner from you in the forest!
Fun fact: This is why they kill Aussies back home where we hunt these guys with dogs and knives only. See those tusks or rippers as they are called? People get excited about the real big ones and think the bigger they are the worse the boar. Wrong. They are all equally deadly due to the extreme upward force boars can generate. Pigs eat by rooting up the ground with their snouts. They dig. So their necks are extremely thick and powerful and their shoulders are like armor plate when they charge you. Then because they are low and you are high they get under your legs and rip upward into your thighs and try to cut your femoral artery. You bleed out in minutes and they only need rippers half an inch long to do it due to the penetration of their necks. In the wild pigs are predatory and hunt in big mobs for meat as well as vegetation. Don’t ever think they won’t put you on the menu if you screw up. They will. Good talk.

I recently automated my usage a bit more. I have checks and balances in place so that I can work on more things in parallel but now I keep running out on my session limit. 🤦‍♂️ I want to move faster!

I was there through a few of previous crises. 2000, 2008 (even if it was the housing crash, it affected people), COVID ca 2020. Where there is a crash, there is immense opportunity as well. Not for everyone but for the right person. We need to swallow our pride, rise to the challenge, and thing outside the box. What was, might not be, so we need to adapt and adjust. Kill your darlings but keep your principles. You'll be fine anon, just don't think things will stay the same!

If you are wondering about ractor conformance for ruby on rails and ruby gems. I will be keeping track of the progress here: github.com/orgs/zoolutions/p… Please help by pinging me about problems so that I can tackle it and keep track of it. Let's fkn go!!

If you want to get involved, and find conformance-kit appealing, I'd consider giving the right people access to help out. I'm also up for contributing more directly if you feel like I'd be a good maintainer. Just let me know

@maciejmensfeld found some issues you opened as well. Let's get everyone involved in this and make ruby and rails the most appealing option for most things in the near future.

Seeing all the commotion in France and Italy, it makes me wonder what their governments are up to that they don’t want the public to know. It’s likely an organized distraction.

I know this is a massive simplification but from what I have seen of ractors so far, on our side as gem maintainers and framework developers and what not. The one thing that gets in our way of supporting ractors is the exact same thing that can cause issues in any type of multi-threading. It is global variables and thread-unsafe choices in our code. So what I want to do, is get all of these boring things like global class variables out of the way everywhere so that we can really start testing running our rails apps with something like kino. I am also stoked about the potential of full ractorizing pgbus. I can see some great savings there as some apps need multiple processes and memory sometimes is... hmm.. expensive. 😎

Thanks to conformance-kit, I am now working on making rails and the eco system ractor friendly. Expect a lot more contributions.
Conformance kit is working wonders: github.com/zoolutions/confor… Most my gems should shortly be ractor, spinel, async, and roundhouse friendly. If you still haven’t given up ruby in preference of rust, help spread the word so that we can make Ruby lightning fast in the future.

@fxn @dhh @tobi @tenderlove @eileencodes @rafaelfranca how can I get some signal through the noise? I am on a mission, have tokens to spend and want to make rails enter 2027 as a serious contender. I am not ready to surrender to rust. How can I get involved?

If you help me get me involved, I’ll make sure that rails 8.2 is fully supporting factors.

I promised to fix rails frontend and herb and reaction view didn’t do it for me so I built phlex-reactive and now I’ve built some extremely reactive rails apps without react, minimal turbo and minimal stimulus. The only time I touch stimulus these days is to remove and old controller that just got superseded by phlex-reactive. Nothing wrong with turbo and stimulus but they don’t have the primitives needed to build frontend at scale and why settle for that? This post is when this journey started. It was the thing that kicked off my OSS journey.
