There has been a lot of misinformation about my bill to criminalize residential school denialism. This bill is not about criminalizing private conversations people have at the kitchen table. This bill is about criminalizing the mass spreading of disinformation by residential school denialists, including books and publications by “so called” research organizations and national news media.   All my bill seeks to do is add residential school denialism to the Criminal Code, under the same section that has criminalized Holocaust denialism. This disinformation has resulted in acts of hate and violence against survivors, families, and communities impacted by the genocide that occurred in residential schools. I can’t think of anything more violent then having a people’s genocide up for debate and then minimizing the violent harms being fuelled by hateful actors. I will be forever grateful that my family‘s Holocaust history is not up for debate. We must all join together to do everything in our power to ensure the same protection for Indigenous peoples and specifically survivors of the genocide that occurred in residential schools.
