Why would the number from circles show up in a pile of needles, or in a check on whole numbers? Nobody expected it to, and that is the surprise.
Buffon dropped needles on lined paper in the 1700s and found that the crossings hide pi. Euler found it in the sum of 1/1, 1/4, 1/9 and onward in 1734. Pick two whole numbers at random and the odds that they share no factor are 6 divided by pi squared.
Pi is not really about circles. Circles are just where we met it first.
