Two lines in the RBI’s latest Bulletin article on NBFCs stood out to me. AI is becoming a real tool in lending and risk. And fintech partnerships are helping NBFCs reach small businesses.
I agree with both. I’d add one condition from what we see in the field.
Data and models work best on top of a relationship, not instead of one. A dairy farmer’s bank statement tells you about cash flow. It doesn’t tell you his second buffalo is sick, or that the local cooperative changed its payment cycle. A good field officer knows that. The model should help him decide faster, not overrule what he sees.
Where does AI help most for a lender like us? Cutting the time from lead to decision. Flagging early stress in collections. Catching documentation errors before they become disputes. Not making the credit call on its own for a first-time borrower with a thin file.
The RBI’s FREE-AI framework is a good compass for this. My simple test: if we can’t explain to a borrower why we said no, we shouldn’t be using that model.
For now: the technology is ready. The discipline to use it well is the hard part.

A teacher in Dehradun told his class that light travels only in straight lines.
One boy in that room spent the next forty years bending it, and the internet now runs on what he built.
His name was Narinder Singh Kapany.
Born in Moga, Punjab in 1926. Schooled in Dehradun, graduated from Agra University, worked as an officer in the Indian Ordnance Factories. In 1952 he went to Imperial College London.
There, with a professor named Harold Hopkins, he bundled thin strands of glass together and transmitted a clear image through them. Around corners. Along bends. Nobody had done it before.
That is fibre optics. Undersea internet cables, endoscopy, laser surgery. He gave the field its name in a 1960 article in Scientific American.
Nehru wanted him back in India as scientific adviser to the defence ministry. He went to America instead. Founded Optics Technology, took it public in 1967, held over a hundred patents, and became one of the first Indians to build a company on that scale in Silicon Valley.
In 2009 the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for the transmission of light through glass fibre. It went to Charles Kao, who had solved the problem of impurities in the glass swallowing the signal.
Kapany was not named.
Whether he should have shared it is still disputed by people who understand the physics. What is not disputed is that Fortune had already listed him among the seven unsung heroes of the twentieth century, ten years earlier.
He died in California in 2020, aged ninety four. India awarded him the Padma Vibhushan the following year.
The WE highway is a mess, no traffic sense, roads are in a pathetic condition. Not sure why the authorities don’t bother to do their basic duties.

Whether you are a supporter of Modi or an opponent of Modi, you have to accept that this kind of rescue operation is unprecedented.
Five people from the Prime Minister's Office were at the spot day and night for 15 days and lived there in the container.
Chief Minister of Uttarakhand was present for three-four hours every day, General VK Singh, Nitin Gadkari and many other ministers used to visit there frequently and review the rescue work.
A special aircraft of the Air Force was sent from Hyderabad and the agar machine was brought from Slovenia. The world's biggest rescue expert was called by a special plane.. To order a special kind of plasma cutter, first the team was sent to Hyderabad, then the plane was sent to America and a special kind of plasma cutter was brought from there.
Four machines and robots and ground penetrating radar were brought from Switzerland by special aircraft.
A helipad and a working runway were also built at the accident site and a vertical oxygen generator plant was installed at the accident site.
Put your hand on your heart and think whether you have ever heard of this rescue operation being conducted in such a quick manner before in history.
