At the same time, accounting is one of the most demanding environments for AI. It is highly domain-specific, deeply interconnected, exception-heavy, and governed by strict requirements around accuracy, controls, and auditability. AI labs and vibe coded apps give a mirage of accuracy in their race for accessible automation. But lack of controls and 90% accuracy isn’t good enough when the 10% that’s wrong can lead to adverse audit opinion, regulatory fines or delisting.

The accounting function is at a breaking point: - The number of people entering the profession is at an all time low - The number of public companies restating financials due to accounting errors is at an all time high. - Pressure from new accounting standards, fragmented systems, and rising business complexity is intensifying.

Meet Rundong Lyu. He has spent his career building complex systems that operate at scale and under pressure. Before Maxima, Rundong led the engineering effort behind @RobinhoodApp Retirement Accounts, architecting the platform from the ground up and bringing it to market in under a year. The launch saw rapid early adoption, with 400K waitlist signups on day one and 30K+ accounts opened in the first week. At @maxima_dot_ai , Rundong is building our AI architecture from first principles. He leads the development of AI systems that deeply understand ERP data, reason across complex financial structures, and operate with the reliability and integrity accounting demands. This work powers several of Maxima’s AI agents, including our Flux Agent, which performs deep analysis to explain why numbers move, how they tie back to the underlying business, and to help answer a wide range of accounting questions, making it a versatile copilot for day-to-day workflows. What distinguishes Rundong’s work is the intersection of large-scale system engineering and applied AI, grounded in real-world accounting constraints. The focus is not experimentation for its own sake, but building agentic AI that accountants can trust in production.
