Imagine that you're on a sailboat going across the pacific. It's the 1500s. There are no radios. Everybody on the boat has a job. You cannot sail the boat by yourself. You need the crew or you will die. Your job is to be in charge of the food supply. The crew says they are having cod for dinner. You tell them the cod is spoiled, and it could kill them. They will have to catch something else or eat whatever they have in storage. The entire crew lashes out at you. They tell you that you are evil and stupid. They say that you want them to starve. They say that you are entitled for wanting something better than cod for dinner. They say you want to keep all the cod for yourself. Their accusations don't make any sense but they keep coming. None of them understand what spoilage is or why it could hurt them. You try to explain. Not only will they not listen, but they become more aggressive every time you try to prevent them from killing themselves. Eventually, they either lock you up, throw you overboard, or you simply stop talking and wait for them to poison themselves and die. Every intelligent person on Earth right now knows that everyone has already eaten the poison. We are waiting for them to die. We do not know what we are going to do alone on the ship after that.
