Headteachers have to make decisions. Yes listening is absolutely important but when it comes to it they have to make the final call & they are accountable for what’s decided. Decision making can’t always involve consultation - nothing would ever get done.

This week’s Budget lands at a moment when education is running on empty.
We are spending the smallest share of our GDP on education in 25 years - under a Labour government.
But this isn’t just about percentages. It’s about the teacher covering yet another break duty under a leaking roof. It’s about children learning in their coats because the heating is unaffordable. It’s about the teaching assistant doing the work of three people because the other two posts have been cut.
Everyone knows what another unfunded pay award - especially a multi-year one - would mean. It would push an already strained system past breaking point.
So where do we go from here?
The Executive meets next Saturday to decide our next steps. But I believe we must strain every fibre to reverse this course - even if that means balloting.

Every time the government sticks a new benchmark or responsibility onto schools, someone needs to manage it.
Martyn’s Law applies to school? Understandable. But who manages it?
Work experience to become mandatory. Cool. Who manages it?
This is why more leaders are needed now.

I must have spoken to well over 100 headteachers across the country recently and they're all saying the same things:
Many, many more pupils with complex SEND needs.
More challenging behaviour and at a younger age.
Too little specialist provision.
Frustrated families.
Social Services bar too high.
Public services skint and burnt out staff.
No real Ofsted reform.
Falling birth rates.
People are angry.
Communities in despair.
Funding that’s nowhere near enough.
Schools are holding the system together but it’s becoming unsustainable - they can't keep asking more and more of staff, with less and less. Something has to give.
Without urgent reform and real investment, I'm worried that this could be the year we've all known was coming and education finally breaks.

Yesterday our old school, Huntington School, performed a brilliant version of Disco Down at their end-of-year arts concert. It’s not just that they sounded incredible…it was where it happened.
That same assembly room where, aged 11, Rick and I saw our first ever live band.

What's killing them, myself included is making cuts to staffing or offering, that we know aren't right but have no choice if we want to balance the books. Losing great people purely down to finance is criminal at a time our children need more not less
