Once again. The idea that AI is only improving rapidly in verifiable domains like math is looking suspect.
Exclusive: Another prestigious award has gone to a writer who seems to have used AI as the crisis of trust in the literary world intensifies, @vauhinivara reports: theatlantic.com/books/2026/1…

they're frustrated that they have a lot of money but struggle to get a table at the restaurants popular among the tech/finance set in sf/ny. it's why their ideas always focus on problems that patrons supposedly have with reservations, rather than problems restaurants have
What’s with these guys and restaurant reservations? What’s this market, $30M a year? Why is every AI sales pitch now obsessed with restaurant reservations? how many people are struggling with this problem on a weekly basis? A few thousand at most? Enough with the reservations!

1/ We just dropped a bombshell investigation into ChatGPT's role in the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting. Incredible reporting [email protected] that will have far-reaching effects...hopefully: motherjones.com/media/2026/0…

I approached one of these towers to photograph it for a story on border surveillance and its impact on local communities. It swiveled and looked at me and another reporter as we approached it. CBP denied my FOIA for the footage.

My latest story in @techreview is about a pastor and his wife who say God told them to launch their own crypto. When it collapsed, investors lost millions—and they were accused of fraud. Grateful to @typeinvestigate, @FundFIJ & @FIREnewsroom for support! technologyreview.com/2026/09…

I was not objecting here, just marveling at what felt like a historic moment. My actual view is that I think it’s interesting that the WSJ opinion page is leaning into AI at the same time big news organizations are emphasizing the importance of human journalism as a check on AI.

New from me:
A 27-year-old employee at BlackRock has let AI 'journalists' loose on the Bay Area. They're mostly taking human reporters' work. missionlocal.org/2026/08/the…

So, uh, personal announcement.
I am now suddenly unemployed. I am currently looking for a data science/machine learning/AI job in the SF Bay Area. If you're interested, let me know!
In the meantime, I now have *plenty* of time for blogging lol.

“Michelle Obama is a man” shouted on the White House lawn in a ring sponsored by Bud Light only available on Larry Ellison’s Paramount Plus. What a way to celebrate America 250 and the twilight of liberal democracy.

The Android XR sunglasses are pretty cute. I'm surprised they went with such a feminine design, especially given how much more skeptical of AI women seem to be in general.

So this is actually a pretty positive development re: online trust and misinformation.

One development I really did find interesting: OpenAI, Eleven Labs, and others are taking up Google's SynthID—its watermark technology for AI-generated content. SynthID will only be effective if it's widely adopted; otherwise, people will just switch to other tools to avoid it.

I'm @ Google I/O in sunny Mountain View today, and I'll be sharing my thoughts here throughout the day. We're just over halfway through the keynote now, and one thing is already pretty obvious—Google isn't coming for Anthropic and OpenAI's shared agentic coding crown anytime soon

"What was the technology like at that point?" Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers asks Sutskever, in a rare interjection, showing genuine curiosity.
Comparing AI in 2018 to now, "it was like the difference between an ant and a cat," says Sutskever. "It's a big difference."

Ilya Sutskever and the rest of the OpenAI board briefly fired Sam Altman as CEO in 2023. “This kind of environment, where the executives [don’t] exactly have the correct information, makes the environment not conducive to attaining any difficult, grand goal,” such as “safe AGI," says Sutskever, reflecting on the event. He thought about firing Altman for a year before doing so.

When asked if Sam Altman was not candid with her by fall of 2023, Mira Murati takes a long pause, sighs, and says, "Not always."
“I had an incredibly hard job to do in an organization that was very complex, and I was asking Sam to lead and lead with clarity," she says.

Shivon Zilis describes her complicated relationship with Elon Musk. Before 2020, "there had been kind of a one-off at the offsite," she says, describing it as romantic. “Then we were friends and eventually colleagues,” she says.
Later, when she wanted to be a mom, "Elon had made the offer around that time [to be a sperm donor] … and I accepted," she says.
