Once again. The idea that AI is only improving rapidly in verifiable domains like math is looking suspect.
Exclusive: Another prestigious award has gone to a writer who seems to have used AI as the crisis of trust in the literary world intensifies, @vauhinivara reports: theatlantic.com/books/2026/1…
I’ve met the guy and gotta say @sundarpichai doesn’t really give off “is a monster” vibes…

they're frustrated that they have a lot of money but struggle to get a table at the restaurants popular among the tech/finance set in sf/ny. it's why their ideas always focus on problems that patrons supposedly have with reservations, rather than problems restaurants have
What’s with these guys and restaurant reservations? What’s this market, $30M a year? Why is every AI sales pitch now obsessed with restaurant reservations? how many people are struggling with this problem on a weekly basis? A few thousand at most? Enough with the reservations!

I approached one of these towers to photograph it for a story on border surveillance and its impact on local communities. It swiveled and looked at me and another reporter as we approached it. CBP denied my FOIA for the footage.

The US has spent billions on surveillance towers, but hundreds of people have died near them. Here’s how to strengthen federal oversight. trib.al/1QJRnP5
Unless the answer to this is an unambiguous yes (and oh boy, it is not that) I do not understand why you would send this email
Our reporters @odonnell_jm & @eileenguo spent the past 15 months investigating deaths along the virtual wall of the southern border. Their investigation reveals that a humanitarian crisis at the border has unfolded in view of the government’s own cameras

CBP has never formally examined whether its towers should have caught these deaths. We also have a policy story addressing this.

We also partnered with @TimesofSanDiego part of the nonprofit @ASUNEWSWELL team.
Read @LillPerlmutter's devastating report on Graciela Gómez Hernández, who died along the border within view of a General Dynamics surveillance tower

My latest story in @techreview is about a pastor and his wife who say God told them to launch their own crypto. When it collapsed, investors lost millions—and they were accused of fraud. Grateful to @typeinvestigate, @FundFIJ & @FIREnewsroom for support! technologyreview.com/2026/09…

I was not objecting here, just marveling at what felt like a historic moment. My actual view is that I think it’s interesting that the WSJ opinion page is leaning into AI at the same time big news organizations are emphasizing the importance of human journalism as a check on AI.

New from me:
A 27-year-old employee at BlackRock has let AI 'journalists' loose on the Bay Area. They're mostly taking human reporters' work. missionlocal.org/2026/08/the…
