Nearly 60% of Massachusetts students in grades 3-8 aren’t reading at a proficient level, with even wider gaps for students of color, English learners, low-income students, and students with disabilities. The Mass Reads Coalition set out to change that—and we’re proud to share that it was named the 2026 Game Changer Campaign of the Year at this year’s @PIEnetwork summit. Led by @mass_potential, Mass Reads advanced the Right to Read Act and won evidence-based literacy instruction for Massachusetts students. The law sets new statewide standards for K-3 reading instruction, requires twice-yearly screening for dyslexia and reading delays, and makes sure parents know if their child falls behind. Thank you to every partner, parent, expert, and educator who showed up, session after session, to make this law happen. We're grateful to share this win with @EdTrustMA, @Ed4Excellence MA, @ExcelinEd, @Latinos4Ed, @MBAENews, @mass_potential, @teachplusMA, and @mass4charters. 🎊

A week later and I’m still excited about this win. The Right to Read bill means every Massachusetts student, including English learners, gets reading instruction grounded in evidence. This is the state's first standalone education bill to become law in nearly a decade, and it took a coalition to get here. Among the many who made it happen: @MaryTamerBoston of @mass_potential, Jennie Williamson of @EdTrustMA, @kerry_dons of TFA Massachusetts, Lisa Lazare (formerly @Ed4Excellence Massachusetts), and @NCTQ’s own @RonNobleJr. THANKS to the legislators, families, and teachers who supported this bill. Grateful to all of you. Now, we must focus on supporting strong implementation!

When 72 to 93% of the majority of 8th graders can’t read, it’s time for @BostonSchools to admit there’s a problem & address it. How? By using evidence-based instruction & training teachers & school leaders on how to use it. #Literacy #MassReads #bospoli #mapoli
