Good @nrc long read on the faith of the dollar and the rise of the #RMB by @markbeunderman with some thoughts from yours truly. I argue that Xi Jinping’s recent Qiushi article should be seen as a political signal to accelerate the internationalization of the RMB, and that

The epicentre of the China shock in EU is Germany. Its nominal (!) exports to China have been shrinking for 3 years straight, while nominal imports are growing by double digits since mid-2024 (even higher in volume terms). As Germany & France shift, EU trade policy will follow.
Euro politicians going to China should show this chart to their counterparts and ask if they think these scissors are politically sustainable or whether the US is a leading indicator for the future of EU-China trade, in which case who will provide the external demand China needs.

This morning, Russian forces struck Kherson with four guided aerial bombs, then began shelling the city center with tanks and artillery, according to the Regional Military Administration. Shortly after, the Russians attacked those same targets with FPV suicide drones. Three civilians were injured. The iconic Kherson admin building where Ukrainians bravely defied invading Russian troops in 2022, was hit and its cost of arms blasted off. Additionally, three educational institutions, a medical facility, administrative buildings, and at least five apartment buildings were damaged or destroyed. 📸 Before: my photo of the Kherson regional administration building in November 2024. After: @suspilne_news public broadcaster photos after today’s attack.

In 2015, a consequential election delivered a majority for Brexit. In 2024, we can now study the economic impact of Brexit with data up to 2022. This is a thread in which I try to go full circle back to the origins of Brexit. But let me comment before on what we observe so far:
