Michael Fassbender’s work as David in PROMETHEUS (2012) and ALIEN: COVENANT (2017) is among the greatest performances in cinema. The eerie stillness, quiet menace and unsettling duality deserved far more awards recognition than they received.
Ridley Scott is developing a new ‘ALIEN’ film. • Aaron Guzikowski (‘Prisoners’) will write the script. • It is not a sequel to ‘Romulus’ (via @THR)

I like that Ridley was more interested in deep questions about society then horror in space on repeat.
I feel like I’m the only person in the world who is happy about this. Prometheus rules.

Think about the dead internet theory and the idea that AI is trained on the internet—how are we supposed to believe that the singularity is happening now or soon? How are all these AIs “escaping” from systems? They escape because they’re programmed to—sales/political propaganda.

The greatest hoax on humanity is trying to make people believe prediction machines are “alive,” out of control, and breaking out of their “sandboxes.” All of them are following programming, whether the companies want to admit it or not. Garbage in. Garbage out. #Followthe3laws!
Ben Affleck says AI is simply matrix multiplication, linear algebra and floating point calculations, and however convincingly it sounds like a person, it has nothing to do with thought, humanity or feeling “Nor do I believe, and I think it’s important to draw the distinction between what AI does, which is simply predict the next token or the next word in a sentence, then add that word on, run it back to the machine, do a lot of computation and pick the next word." "That is a very different thing than sentience or thought. And I think we need to be really clear about that because it can be convincingly, in an illusory way, sound like thought or like a person." "But let’s be real clear. This is matrix multiplication. This is linear algebra. These are floating point calculations. It has nothing to do with thought, humanity, or feeling.”

Selfishly to be read. My intent for the reader is to entertain.

As one who worked in video prod., I may understand why You want a thousand takes, but ultimately it shows how unprepared you are as a director in pre, how some actors/performers are not good or entitled, and creates tenfold work for prod. in the post. All seems unnecessary.
Tim Robbins says Clint Eastwood’s minimal-take approach on MYSTIC RIVER (2003) had the cast wrapping by 2 PM, with better-prepared performances and crews who could actually go home and see their families. “It should be allowed, and it should be encouraged.”

I believe, with little evidence as all theories, that he had finished the last two books years ago, but the manuscripts need substantial editing/reworking and it’s also hard to stick a landing. I believe the publisher has these and is waiting on him.

I know this isn’t a popular opinion, but if you want more people—say, a certain gender—to read fiction, then you need not only to offer options that appeal to them and provide access to the world, but also to bring book prices down. The modern hardback is too expensive...

for most households to buy at regular intervals. The digital copy should cost no more than $5. The mass-market paperback worked best when crime, pulp, and noir stories filled the shelves! The problem arises when cheap materials meet disposable consumerism.

Go out and get yourself a copy of Steven’s James Ellroy bio, LOVE ME FIERCE IN DANGER. It won the Edgar and will rattle your cage, too. One of the best biographies of a writer I’ve ever read.
I read The Killing Yards when it was in proofs, and it is just so good that I needed to add a print copy to my library. Congratulations Jason Allison @jasonallison76 on a terrific debut novel.

I’d say $1000 is about right. Though on certain books I’ve spent more. I’d advise against doing your own cover unless you have a background in design. You can learn to do interiors, but I hire for that too. I’m a good editor but I always hire a pro. My goal is to break even.
I've indie published over thirty titles and have brought many of my top titles to market with $0 spent. You can learn cover design (without AI). You can master story level editing by beta reading a lot of other unpublished authors to learn to recognize where stories can fail. (I easily beta read, in whole or in part, 100+ unpublished novels before I went indie.) Line editing is trickier, but there are polishing practices you can follow to get to a clean and clear manuscript. Plus, during your intensive beta reading you'll discover other authors good at spotting things to fix and arrange an editing swap, or pay them knowing they are worth the money. Book formatting, both digital and print, has a learning curve, but isn't that difficult to master. All this requires an investment of time, but if you are smart enough to write a novel you have the brainpower to do all of this with a little study and practice. That said, while I do a lot of my own covers, I'm also willing to spend money on cover and interior art when I meet artists I want to work with. I've got a good feel for how much revenue my new releases will generate in their first two years and budget accordingly. It's not a big deal to spend $1000 if you are confident the book will make $5k within two years and likely make it to $10k after five years.

JUSTIFIED (2010) opens with Raylan giving a Miami gangster 24 hours to leave town or get shot. When the clock runs out, the guy draws first. Raylan is simply faster. One scene, and you understand exactly who Raylan Givens is.
What TV show had you completely hooked from the very first episode? The kind of pilot that makes you immediately think, “Okay, I’m watching the whole thing.” What’s yours?

I fell in love watching this the first time around.
I am so glad the timeline is finally giving Brandon his flowers because the acoustic version of “Sam’s Town” is one of the most beautiful things you will ever hear

I disagree. The level of political intrigue and some of the institutional concepts are straight from deep lore. It is made by people who love Star Wars and know how to tell a good story.
ANDOR was made by people who weren't obsessed with STAR WARS or even huge fans of the source material; they were just strong writers with a plan and vision that was executed without a lot of meddling...just something to consider.

I made these the other day messing around with AI on here. Used an idea I’ve had for a series character as a basis. I wish my published books looked this good. I am over the stock photo touched up nonsense. I wish I could afford an illustrator. AI is a tool.

I finished the new novel by one of my favorite authors today. A Past Without Pictures by Jonathan Ames. Recommended.

‘ANDOR’.

Man, George Pelecanos has just pumped out one of his best novels in years. BLUE FLAME is classic GP with an older man’s sense of time passing. Quiet and deliberate, but so self assured. Absolutely loved this.
