Happy to share that I recently defended my dissertation! Big thanks to my committee, my INCREDIBLE colleagues, and @AphasiaLab especially – for the many years of guidance, and for creating a rich, rigorous, collaborative intellectual environment at the Center for Brain Recovery.

Indeed, I've been fortunate. On that note, I'm also happy to share that I've started a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Argye Hillis at @HopkinsMedicine, where I'll be working on longitudinal/predictive/multimodal modeling and neuromodulation, among other fun things. Stay tuned!

🧠Neurological disorders are complex—and so is the science behind improving diagnosis and treatment! At the Center for Brain Recovery (@AphasiaLab) I work alongside an incredible team using cutting-edge research to tackle these challenges head-on — including how cerebral small vessel disease shapes outcomes in stroke and dementia. Your support is vital. Using ML, we achieved strong predictive performance (e.g., F1 ≥ 0.77) by considering language severity, cognitive abilities, and demographics. Most exciting: Untreated language abilities & cognitive performance emerged as key predictors of cross-language generalization. 2/3

This work provides the first data-driven evidence for how multiple factors shape recovery in bilingual aphasia – and may help clinicians better anticipate treatment response. Thanks to amazing colleagues and guidance from @AphasiaLab @UTAustin @ClaudiaNeuropsi and others! 3/3

It was a lot of fun contributing to what I hope is an interpretable (pun somewhat intended) guide to ML in SLP. Much work ahead to refine and integrate these tools into clinical practice, but I believe the benefit for both patients and clinicians will be well worth the effort.
This open access tutorial is a must read for clinicians in all fields interested in understanding key concepts and applications of #ML #AI in communication disorders research. @ASHAJournals @ASHAweb @SIGPerspectives pubs.asha.org/doi/10.1044/20…
