Sometimes it’s a lawyer’s job to get yelled at by the judge for things beyond the lawyer’s control. Just have to take it and shake it off.
You know how we always complain about senior lawyers who love to respond about how in all their years of practice, they have never seen something or this is always how it’s done? Well I just had someone tell me that in their 3 years of practice, they have never seen something lol
Me: *feels guilty printing for trial*
Shows up to first day of trial.
Sheriff: “ugh, lawyers are the worst tree killers I know”
Me: I KNOW TY 😭
I try not to be offended by literally any encounter I have as a junior woman in law but tell me I am justified to be when a more senior lawyer responds to a basic request on a file with “never in all my years of practice have I been asked to do x,y,z”
My husband popped by to see me in chambers briefly this week. A self rep saw me talking with him over break and asked if he was my son. When I said no, my husband, they asked if he was much younger 😭 like no, I am not old enough to have a 30 yr old son nor cougar aged tysm
When opposing counsel advises the court that they don’t want to proceed with the hearing that they set and that’s the first time you’re hearing this. The judge and I looked at each other like:
Just one of those weeks where I wish I worked in a library and could do quiet desk work instead of going to court and arguing lol
Overhead lawyer conversations in the court hallway: well, if they want to detail their sex life on the record in court, that’s their choice
#thejoysofFamilyLaw
Lawyer & client leaving the court room together:
Client: so you can help me with that, right?
Lawyer: I just did. *walks away quickly*
I love sitting in court hallways
Big rookie mistake was setting anything in chambers the week following judges reading week….. not once, but three times this week lol
As a junior and working with often vulnerable clients who have experienced various forms of family violence, I would love to hear some tips from counsel on how to prepare your client for cross examination about the violence/assaults they experienced.

The Court allowed an appeal from a final parenting order that provided the father with equal and unsupervised parenting time, finding the trial judge failed to conduct a proper analysis of the mother's allegations of family violence. bccourts.ca/jdb-txt/ca/24/00…
When the judge says: “I’m going to ask you my question again and you’re going to listen” - you may as well end your day right there. Probably retire as well.
I’m still very junior but I have officially felt the first heartbreak of when a favourite judge of yours retires 🥲
