This preprint shows our brains are constantly flickering (~16 Hz) between multiple representations of reality, and suggests there is a "selector" that determines which state we perceive. Interestingly, LSD rather reliably creates a "strobe" effect at about the same frequency. (To be more precise, people report ~15-20 Hz). The bouncing ball illustrated below shows what that 16 Hz strobe effect looks like. Is LSD perhaps persisting older representations of reality in each conscious epoch? Maybe it is doing something similar in the suppressed epochs since LSD obviously has more cognitive effects than a visual strobe. Weirdly some drugs like 2C-B give a slower strobe effect (5.5 Hz) and DMT gives a faster strobe (22 Hz). Do they change the rate at which we flip between conscious and suppressed temporal epochs, along with enhancing the persistence of conscious states?

Your eyes and ears take in about a billion bits of information every second. Your brain only thinks at about 10. Two neuroscientists at Caltech put a number on how fast human thought actually runs. The paper is called "The Unbearable Slowness of Being." Their answer: roughly 10 bits per second. For comparison, your WiFi probably moves 100 million bits per second. You get annoyed when Netflix buffers. Your brain could never keep up with the show anyway. So how do you measure the speed of a thought? They looked at decades of experiments, from typing to speaking to video games to memory contests. The answer kept landing in the same place. Take an expert typist at 120 words per minute. Strip out the predictable letters, and the real information flowing out of them is about 10 bits per second. Or blindfolded speedcubers. They look at a scrambled Rubik's cube for about 5.5 seconds, then solve it with their eyes covered. The information they absorb while looking works out to around 12 bits per second. Even the game Twenty Questions works out to about 10. Meanwhile, the 6 million color sensing cells in just one of your eyes can carry about 1.6 billion bits per second. That is a gap of about 100 million to one. Your senses are a firehose. Your thinking is a straw. The researchers say the brain seems to have two modes. An outer brain that handles the flood of sights, sounds and movement. And an inner brain that squeezes all of it down to the few bits you actually think about. It may also explain something you have felt your whole life. Why you can only really think about one thing at a time. They even predicted that Elon Musk's brain will talk to a Neuralink chip at about 10 bits per second. Not because of the chip. Because of the brain. In plain English: you are not slow because you are tired. Every human mind runs on the same narrow pipe. So the next time you feel overwhelmed, remember. Your brain was never built to take it all in.

Yes, Goedel was brilliant and his main theorems are dramatic and devastating. But Tarski utterly blows my mind. While Goedel exposed a limitation of proof, Tarski exposed a limit of definition. Arithmetical truth itself cannot be defined by a formula in the language of arithmetic. A definition need not be an algorithm. Plenty of things with a precise definition are uncomputable! Moving from “we cannot mechanically establish every truth” to “we cannot even define the full truth predicate here” is amazing — it crosses a conceptual boundary. Tarski’s work, IMHO, reveals more, philosophically, than Goedel.

Terence Tao just published a 27 slide deck saying the AI math hype only shows you the wins.. every week you see a new post.. AI solved an open math problem.. Tao says that feed hides most of the story.. the failed attempts never get posted.. the compute bill never gets posted.. and most frontier problems are STILL unsolved.. then he went further.. blindly chasing more solved problems is now hurting math.. open problems were never the goal.. they were lighthouses.. the real value was everything mathematicians learned on the way there.. let AI jump straight to the answer and the whole journey disappears.. in 1976 Appel and Haken proved the four color theorem using a computer.. and many mathematicians refused to accept it because no human could check it by hand.. 50 years later the fear has flipped.. the computer is right.. but nobody understands WHY.. so Tao asks you one question.. if an AI cured cancer and passed every trial.. would you inject it before a single human understood how it works.. you spent centuries thinking math was about answers.. answers are now cheap.. understanding is the new scarce thing
