This piece took me five years to write. Five years of being really annoyed by the notion of “luck.”
Pinning people’s successes on “luck” was stealing credit from…something.
I just wasn’t sure what that something was. This piece is my attempt to get closer to that something.
New piece today for The Company Letter on luck, art and why I think they’re not so different.

Was very fun to write this with @WillManidis for @every and see the thesis play out at Lafayette over the past year. Very long AI transformation in the lower middle market.
with "ai transformation" in the news, republishing a piece that @johnkennedy_4 wrote in early 2024 about the new software economy.

I spent the last month obsessed with finding colors that can't be displayed on a conventional screen. This is what I found. moultano.wordpress.com/2026/…
This is one of the most incredible software experiences I have ever had.
It’s amazing how small digital gestures (emoji reactions to a message, blue texts, etc) completely change your perception of how “real” the voice on the other end of the line is.
Impressed.

Prediction: In the AI age, taste will become even more important. When anyone can make anything, the big differentiator is what you choose to make.

Young builders of the world: Really want to come to SF? But can't afford to come to SF? Please read on. I'm going to sponsor two of you to visit this summer.
I've been promoting San Francisco as THE place that those who wish to build the future should be. But I've got a couple sad replies from people saying it's financially out of reach. I get it. I could barely afford to come here in 2011—I bought my flights and initial accommodation with a €2k bank loan.
So to pay off my guilt for pumping SF, and to support those younger versions of me who can't even get a loan, I'm going to sponsor two young builders to come here for 90 days starting 1 June. They'll get:
- CHEAP return flights from your home and back
- CHEAP Bay Area accommodation
- A $50 daily stipend… you'll need to like cooking :)
- One meeting with an immigration attorney to advise on your options
- One meeting with me for a high five and a pep talk :)
This will be hard. It's NOT a holiday. It's definitely not meant to be. But you'll get an exposure to the greatest city for builders on earth and what you do from there will be up to you.
To apply:
- mail: liz+sf@eoghan.com
- include your name, your age, your location, and ONE line on why you want to come here
- confirm that there's no way you could afford to come here by your own means
Please don't mail more than once. We may request a short interview. We'll choose people who we think can make the most of it + somewhat at random.
The deadline for applications is this Friday :)
To everyone not applying, I'd appreciate a retweet or otherwise a share of this message. I'll announce the winners next week and send some updates through the summer on how it all goes.

I don’t know enough about the guy’s ideas or actions to make a call.
But as far as speech-making, constructing slogans, preparing to rally people…
Undoubtedly among the best I’ve ever seen.

If it’s true that they torched an $80 billion company cause they thought they were too close to building God, then that’s orders of magnitude the most punk rock thing I’ve ever heard of.

We evolved to live in small tribes and now live outside of our natural habitat, in an advanced civilization. One effect of this mismatch is that there are a bunch of things that feel dangerous to us that aren't actually dangerous, leading us to be way too risk averse. Like:
- Asking someone out on a date
- Trying something new even though you'll suck at it at first
- Quitting your job to start a company or try a career in the arts
- Putting your real voice out there on controversial topics
For primates living in a small tribe, rejection, embarrassment, failure, and criticism posed actual material dangers. These things are not dangerous today, but our software hasn't been updated. So we miss out on living our best life, hiding in the 1-4 zone of the danger scale. In a world of overly risk averse people, the epiphany that the 4-7 zone is actually a safe place to play is a superpower.

Reminder that the United States could have been the world leader in 5G technology instead of China if we had just given *one guy* a green card when he needed one
