There have been lots of estimates of C emissions following the Australian #BlackSummer fires. How do they stack up against field observations? Our new paper looks at this, and post-fire tree mortality.

Hey #firebehaviour twitter, are crown fires in eucalypt forests (or plantations) mostly passive crown fires? Can large runs of active crown fire occur?
@Phil_Zylstra @trentpenman @FireLab_UTAD
My understanding is that crown fire in eucalypt forest is mostly passive, though short (~50 m) bursts of crowning can occur ahead of the fire front. However, I recall an interview during the 2019 fires in northern NSW when a resident described active crown fire behaviour.
A great new article led by Eli Bendall that examines the effect of drought and fire frequency on eucalypt mortality and resprouting

We are still celebrating the #EurekaPrizes won by the @BushfireHub, but consider this: of the 22 University scientists working on that project, 82% have insecure positions, and most are looking for work (average 15 months contract left). The gig economy reaches everywhere.
