I worked on this at Twitter in 2015. IIRC we tested it and most people didn't get any views and we had to have some thresholds before showing it as "0 views" was depressing We also wanted to be accurate and not count if someone quickly scrolls past your tweet in their TL

Twitter is rolling out View Count, so you can see how many times a tweet has been seen! This is normal for video. Shows how much more alive Twitter is than it may seem, as over 90% of Twitter users read, but don’t tweet, reply or like, as those are public actions.

The past 2 weeks have been surreal. My mother became psychotic and was involuntarily committed. My father died two days later. My mother is out now and needs 24/7 care. My sisters & I just launched a GoFundMe to help take care of her. Thanks for any help. gofundme.com/f/4g6bd-taking-…

Ihara fought relentlessly for 280 in the face of strong skepticism from top executives, I’m told. He co-authored the blog post explaining the value of 280 characters when it launched: blog.twitter.com/en_us/topic…

Elon Musk has said he's about context on tweets, so here's context for these shirts: They came from Twitter's Black employee resource group and were popularized by @jack, who wore a version around to conferences to support the group (and was sometimes ridiculed for it).

A buddy who's interested in end-to-end encryption (E2EE) but hasn't done one of these projects in the very messy place which is the real world happened to ask me this morning about pitfalls which might not be obvious. So here's a partial list in the hopes that it's helpful. 🧵

In case the end is nigh, my fav twitter moment was a highly improbable crossing of paths that reconnected me to a stranger I'd shared a Greyhound bus ride with almost 20 years prior...

Families of the tragedy in Itaewon are releasing details of their loved ones. This is a thread of who they are. Reading their names, seeing their faces, and learning about their stories broke me. Thank you to @VeryAsian for posting on IG #itaewon – at Boston, MA

If you are a hiring manager wondering “why is it so hard to hire a senior developer” consider that it’s partially because of situations like below. Those who need help about some framework-specific-thing-easy-to-learn-with-a-little-help are often rejected on interviews.

Our understanding of MLOps is limited to a fragmented landscape of thought pieces, startup landing pages, & press releases. So we did interview study of ML engineers to understand common practices & challenges across organizations & applications: arxiv.org/abs/2209.09125

Fantastic, thoughtful profile of @huahsu by @RyuSpaeth. He writes that Hsu's career is "evidence that, while it may not be possible or even desirable to transcend race, it doesn’t have to wholly define a person either." vulture.com/article/hua-hsu-…

1/ In the second half of the 16th century, Britain plunged into an energy crisis. At the time, the primary source of energy driving the British economy was heat derived from the burning of wood, and Britain was literally running out of trees.

One of the nice parts of a PhD is that I get to learn about a field in a principled way. I finally got around to posting my notes for the Berkeley DB prelim: shreya-shankar.com/db-prelim…

Here I am, judging whether they should get this opportunity or not. Basically I'm saying "you’re not good enough to have a chance.” Help me say YES to refugees who want to learn to code by volunteering for @refcode_tweets starting this Wednesday evening in Atlanta. #refcode

Imagine having developed vaccines at lightning pace for a deadly disease & then used the development of vaccines to convince people all was ok, drop mitigations & normalise *much* higher levels of infection so that overall deaths actually increased/were the same in some countries
Reality check In Canada COVID kills as many people (if not more) this year as it did in 2020 and 2021. Lower IFR is not good news if it tricks authorities into letting the virus spread. Low IFR made the "mild" Omicron a very effective killer.
