One thing I’ve really noticed is that newly serious poker players have a very easy time understanding variance when it is negative but can’t comprehend it at all when it is positive. Outside of extreme fringe cases they’ll never tell you they crushed today because they ran good
When estimating win rates 3 things are clear:
1. Ppl often mistake ideal conditions as a representation of the avg.
2. Ppl conflate timespan (months/years etc) with actual hand volume
3. There's minimal understanding of how negative sum games work, particularly the impact winners & rake have on the stability of an ecosystem.
