you don’t have to be extraordinary to justify wanting to do extraordinary things you also don’t have to reject ordinary human desires in order to live an ambitious life

excited to see more waterloo coverage but respectfully this piece did not hit for me. the sauce of waterloo that outsiders don't get is it's all a bunch of mr meseeks boxes when you get into a certain crowd. everyone ropes each other into thinking more ambitiously, something canada overall seems to lack. its filled with misfit kids like me who had ideas and made things and got told that was dumb or otherwise judged for being interested in things. i never got anything more than a "huh, cool I guess" when i showed my friends in toronto my side projects but at waterloo everyone was asking questions and telling me what else I should make. you can't just sit still when everyone else is moving. canadians are nice polite and fall in line, the coastal elites in america are spiky, it's in their founding story to fight and overcome the odds. the engineering coop culture feeds you to cali early, to learn what it means to fight at a startup or at least raise your ambitions to faang a 300k starting salary rather than 80k at a canadian bank. it's also small enough to cross pollinate easily. word gets around much quicker when everyone hangs out in the same 2 buildings and shawarma shops, so if @sincethestudy is building a robot, and I'm semi interested in that, i can look at him and think "why not? if he can do it why can't i do my own thing?" culture begets culture, just as a select few in silicon valley started a movement saying "this is where you need to be to make make the future", waterloo is benefitting from the same momentum. the drain happens because after grad, people's ambitions are so raised from their peers and coops that they get roped into bigger ambitions. and the capitalism is just much better at supporting these ambitions in america, especially in sf or nyc where so many top wloo grads end up. no young hungry ambitious person ever wants to take a step down, and in their internships they're alongside people from harvard stanford mit, so knowing you can stand with them why would you ever stay in canada with a 60% pay cut and a less mature capital allocation scene? that's like expecting a harvard grad to take a consulting job in cambridge instead of new york just because it's closeby. any person I know who's actively chosen to stay is because their ambitions are to make toronto/calgary/waterloo great again, not just "cali or bust" lots more about waterloo than meets the surface, and lots to do here to support the incredible people that pass through it - if anyone wants to learn more please hit me up i'd be happy to chat and point you to awesome people that deserve more love pics from the olden times:

got @typesafeai’s new model Jev to play Super Mario Bros. fast inference + structured outputs makes it surprisingly good for real time use cases. I'm excited to see what can be done with these new models!

The key to saving the environment is not looking backward, it’s moving forward. I realized this the first time I visited Italy twenty years ago. Everything was clean and green. The rivers sparkled. The lesson for me was obvious: the answer is not underdevelopment. The answer is progress. When China was poor, the air was so polluted that people could barely see the blue sky. Today, blue skies have returned to their cities. Development does not only create wealth, it also provides the resources needed to restore and protect the environment. Some environmentalists want us to preserve every aspect of our biodiversity, including the mosquitoes for example, so that researchers can fly in once every ten years from their universities (which build particle accelerators and billion-dollar laboratories with their pocket money), study our ecosystems, and count how many people died from dengue outbreaks. They want to buy our air through carbon credits. If carbon credits were such a great deal, they would be selling them to us, not the other way around. Cleaning every river, lake, and water source in El Salvador, and ensuring they remain clean and sparkling, would cost roughly $12 billion. Where is that money supposed to come from without economic development? Carbon credits? The path forward for our country is the path of Japan and Singapore, not the path of the Congo.
autonomous robot driving through the field at night. no chemicals. no pesticides. just UV light killing pathogens and pests while everyone sleeps. this is @tricrobotics. this is what chemical-free pest control looks like at scale.

The faster the world changes, the more we must turn to timeless truths: the fragility of knowledge, the centrality of face-to-face collaboration, the wisdom of tradition. We are all influenced arcane scribblings of the past; we are all the wearers of "cerulean sweaters". To know this history is to move more freely through the world; dialogue with the past empowers us to shape the future. What a privilege to bring people together in Toronto to discuss these ideas alongside @_benjaminparry and @jiamixue, hosted on Wygo by @jossmurphyy, featuring the gorgeous design of @anthea_irl, a beautiful livestream led by @looeegee, and a full-blown book fair. This was the beginning of a dialogue we hope to carry forward in Toronto for the rest of our lives. It is an honour to be part of The Great Conversation with all of you. Stay tuned for the full video & written lecture in the next few weeks.
Thank you for taking part in The Great Conversation. The lecture was the beginning of a dialogue we hope to carry forward for the rest of our lives. It is an honour to be in this tradition with all of you.

We’ve been telling the story of technology backwards. Our tools take center stage, but these artifacts are the lagging indicators of progress, not the drivers. What propels the world forward is dialogue, a swirling conversation across generations about what it means to be human. You have been part of this conversation your entire life. You just haven't been formally introduced. On May 27th, during @TOTechWeek we invite you to join The Great Conversation, a lecture about how technologists shape history. Hosted with @ambitionlabsinc, @NotionHQ, @cursor_ai, @ambrook, @colossusmag, @psumvc, and many more. Tickets on sale now!
We are told to maximize our agency, to "just do things." But how do we know which things are worth doing? On May 27th, we will gather at Isabel Bader Theatre to answer that question together. The Toronto Society, irid, and Wygo present The Great Conversation, a lecture by Matthew Jordan. thegreatconversation.ca

Every part of the symposium is someone's demo. From the AV, to food, ticketing, and logistics. You get to see only 10 demos on the stage, but it's only possible because of the demoers working behind the scenes.
we are so back everything worked 😋 thank u to the crew and symposium av team!!!!! photos by Shalott and keyaan! @socraticainfo
