Our grandparents used to have staple/everyday shoes and jewelry that lasted them so long that they passed on to kids and grandkids as heirlooms and I have “high quality” shoes and earrings falling apart after like 1 year of wear cause I “wore it too much”????

This is the first written instruction manual that I know of.
Replying to @stewartbrand
The new section is titled "Great Manuals in History." Three of them were created deliberately to break through class barriers. One, from 1320, is the first martial arts manual (thanks to Kyle Wiens @kwiens for the tip):

I wonder if the inventor of paper straws ever considered that they would be in prolonged contact with liquid.

Design that lasts is the best design
A reminder: some problems have been solved. They’re simply gone. Here is the Brannock Device for measuring feet invented in 1927 and still in use. So durable are these contraptions that I bet a number of the things have been in continuous use, in fact. Something to strive for

Yes, it’s finally happening! Planning a launch kind of thing in early September, where I can tell you all about it. More about that later.
You can now pre-order Jonathan Chapman's upcoming book "Meaningful Stuff: Design That Lasts" from MIT Press. The book, which serves as an argument for a design philosophy of "better, not more," comes out in August 2021. buff.ly/3c2FsSp
