Replying to @BandLab
@BandLab Love the idea of your platform, but question: Seems from your Terms of Use that uploading a song to BandLab may give you (the company) wide-ranging rights to use & sell it, even if I set the song as 'Private'. Am I wrong? ToU & linked docs are unclear. CC: @EFF @BenMaras – at Portland, OR

@BandLab Or more to the point, what assurance do artists on BandLab have that the company isn't mining its site for content to sell – without paying royalties to artists and without their knowledge? – at Portland, OR
You're right; this is the apocalypse.

I went to an obscure hearing today in the Danish Parliament. It blew my mind, not because of the substance, but because the US Congress has totally warped my view of hearings. And I’m just dorky enough to do a thread about it. 1

Days 8 & 9: 1st days of the 'Int'l Week of Democracy Innovation' in Manchester. So much great stuff happening in Canada, in Poland, and all across the UK, where citizens' assemblies are 🔥 right now. – at Manchester, England

Day 7: Birmingham today. Morning: observing the UK's 1st nationwide citizens' assembly on climate. Impressive & ambitious. Then, a hilariously old-school British lunch, I'm told: jacket potato, plaid curtains, on a BOAT. After, wandering in the rain. On to Manchester to drop car. – at Birmingham, England

Ironically, unlike the 'proprietary' politics of redistricting in most states, this font can be downloaded for free. uglygerry.com/
Why use Arial or Times New Roman when you can use Ugly Gerry, the font made entirely out of gerrymandered congressional districts?

"Precious little" democratic reform has occurred in the UK in the past half-century. Elections have become referenda on our general mood about the state of things, rather than on policy. —Ed Cox, @theRSAorg at #InnovatingLocalDemocracy Conference – at Manchester, England

Principles for democratic reform: 1) Treat democracy as a system, not an institution. 2) Recognize the need to use a combination of tools. Elections are just one tool; there are 100s of participatory and deliberative forms we must use. (1/2) – at Manchester, England

3) We must make democracy real. Most folks care about results, not process. We must not forget real-life challenges. 4) Prioritize deliberation, prioritize methods that make time to consider evidence & tradeoffs. —Ed Cox @theRSAorg (2/2) – at Manchester, England
Day 6: Productive morning. 5am Inspired to write. 7am Inspired to eat leftover Szechuan chicken. Looked for relatives in village churchyard. No luck. They're dead to me. Country walk. Canned oxtail soup & 🥕 for lunch b/c there was no room in the inn. Roman villa ruins. To B'ham. – at Slad, England

Day 5: A day of glorious sleep: late to rise, early to bed. The luxury! Fab Citizens Jury by @JeffersonCtr in Gloucester. Daylight in the valley: idyllic rolling-green. At night: iconic spook. Top-shelf Indian take-away in my 'hut'. S.Holmes bedtime murder stories. #opiumnotgreat

Day 4: Hot damn the Romans loved to bathe. Not the most sulfuric water ever; probably why it hasn't cured me. On to Gloucester, then a farm in the Slad Valley, where I had ancestors? Farmer hosts surprise me w/ lasagne, tea & convo on political organization. Everyone SO friendly.

Day 3: Nigerian brunch. Thrift store car-camp curtains. Politics w/ (surprisingly?) pro-🇺🇸 Kurdish barbers. Look how Tube trains barely squeeze out like paste. Awesome car-rent guy who marked the whole car as damaged. £5 sleeping bag from kind old man Ray/Roy? Nite drive to Bath. – at London, England

Day 2: Feeling quite at home. In Trafalgar Sq: great blues guitarist, 2 floating Yodas & giant wobbly Pikachu. Met 2 colleagues, 1 by chance on the street!? Small town & world. Nat'l Gallery audio tour tells me England's flag is old ✝️ symbol of resurrection? Nite walk on Thames.

Day 1: With @JQAdams_MHS as inspiration, I'm going to journal this UK trip in tweet-sized daily portions. This entry is belated. Like last night; jetlagged, wandering the n'hood. 11pm luggage reorganized. 1am McDonald's. £20 notes are too wide for US wallets. Glorious sleep. Zzz. – at East Ham, London
