Knowing what your data means is the foundation. Getting people and agents to act on that meaning, and proving it was allowed, is what gets built on it.
Welcome to the Autumn 2026 issue of the Year of the Graph Newsletter, where we explore what context is, and how graphs can power the Agentic AI stack.
Three signals from the same quarter that context is going mainstream:
- Forrester and Gartner published competing context layer definitions
- Google paid $10 million for a defunct airline's internal business data
- W3C and Google released competing formats for machine-readable wikis
Mainstream doesn’t mean settled, but whichever way you cut it, semantics is a key part of context. Context spans semantics, state, and controls. The need to define semantics is what led to the resurgence of ontology.
Inside this issue:
- Ontology as the guardrail, not the prompt: what moving agents from retrieval to governed execution requires
- Graph engineering: from loops to mapped systems that remember what happened and who owns what
- Graph memory for agents
- Vault-LD, YAML-LD and the Open Knowledge Format for LLM wikis
- Ontology readiness and automation: generating an ontology is getting cheap, validating one is not
- GraphRAG: where it works, and where it is going
- Market traction: Oakley Capital's agreement to acquire Graphwise, and a forecast growing from $1.34 billion in 2025 to $19.16 billion by 2035
- New tools, releases and use cases
This issue brought to you by @metaphacts , Graphwise, @CambridgeIntel, @TENTRIS_DB , @yworks , packt, State of the Graph, and @Connected_Data London.

Connected Thinking Friday: Civilizational Surges, Critical Thresholds, and the Wisdom Born from Failure
"Civilizations might be viewed as surges of history that rise toward this level of abundant living, but always fall back because social institutions are not appropriately modified at that time of crisis when accumulated resources – material, social and spiritual, open the way to it.
Yet it is just at the same time when the surge of history breaks and fails that most wisdom is attained concerning the conduct of life. Failure is always the supreme teacher, if accompanied by faith and courage."
— Henry Nelson Wieman, The Directive in History, 1949
Wieman names something that macro-history confirms again and again: civilizations collapse because their institutions — the structures meant to channel collective energy — fail to evolve at the very moment the opening appears. The surge crests. The window closes. And the fall begins.
But Wieman also offers something rarer than diagnosis: hope grounded in pattern. Because if failure recurs across civilizations, so does its fruit — the accumulated wisdom about what went wrong, and what could be done differently. This is the gift that serious civilizational analysis offers us right now, at our own moment of institutional crisis.
The Commons, P2P, and the emergent next system are not utopian dreams. They are the lessons of previous surges, encoded and ready — if we have the faith and courage to act on them.

* The Noosphere a different realm, it's not just planetary, it's another plane:
linkeddataorchestration.subs…
@linked_do explains the p2p approach:
"Medieval guilds were trans-local in their own fashion: craftsmen traveled between regions, carried knowledge across borders, and maintained standards across cities. But guilds were always collocated. Physical proximity was essential to the work. Today’s peer-to-peer communities are scattered across continents yet deeply coordinated. The shift is not merely one of geographic scale.
“It’s not just a bigger geography,” Bauwens says. “It’s actually another plane.” He borrows the concept of the noosphere – the sphere of shared human knowledge – to describe it. The digital commons has its own geography, its own territories, its own dynamics. It is not an extension of physical space; it is a new kind of space altogether.
Looking further back, Bauwens finds a more surprising historical parallel: religious communities. The Pope was never the head of a physical nation-state in the modern sense. He led all Catholic believers, wherever they lived. These were communities of affinity, not kinship or geography, organized around shared belief and common purpose.
Today’s digital communities organize around shared projects and joint aims. Bauwens calls it “object-oriented sociality”: what unites people is a common goal, not a common location."

My priority this year is to finish my book proposing a civilizational history of human coordination capacity. Four chapters are in draft form, in 2 different versions.
But I am a little bit stuck. First of all, I have written all my books with co-authors. It's a kind of stimulation I may need, because being eternally curious, I'm continuously exploring new material, rather than writing it down. So, I need a intellectually sophisticated person who would be interested in co-authoring, while allowing me to take the overall lead.
Second, I am very precarious in income, and going from material crisis to material crisis. Right now, my family's stuff in Bangkok is in boxes, due to an inability to come up with rent money. So I am in one right now, and this is why I launched the fundraising yesterday, to specifically guarantee the work on the wiki. If you think my work is important, please consider responding to the fundraising. Beyond the 'emergency' request, how do I even solve the structural issue, given my political positioning makes me fall between the two chairs. Neither Soros nor the Koch brothers (as a type of NGO funder) would be interested in funding the kind of integrative work I am attempting. Who would ? In this pragmatic age of KPI's, who funds deeper civilizational research ?
The following is a copy of a dialogue with chatGPT. While the AI only knows a small part of my work due to my recent questions, as I am moving from the cultural historians to the cultural-spiritual historians, it nevertheless has an impressive grasp of the logic of my research and inquiry.
Anyways, I am not giving up and never will, just sharing the circumstances in which I am working My difficulties are largely due to my own personality traits no doubt. Nevertheless, I have been able to send my four kids, all healthy and motivated youngsters, to the uni, despite being underfunded from 2005 to 2013, and from 2018 onwards. One more year to go and the two last ones will be done. Web3 sources of funding seem to be drying up due to crashing treasuries.

Paul Spinrad:
"A worldwide network of microrecyclers is turning local plastic waste into commercial products, while building community and expertise. The 10-year-old Precious Plastic movement encompasses hundreds of workspaces, ranging from Precious Plastic Gambia, which culls plastic pollution from tropical beaches in Africa, to Yukon Plastics, which commercializes waste plastic donated by businesses in northern Canada. One affiliate, Robries in Indonesia, has 20 full-time employees and serves clients worldwide. That’s not local, it’s true, but it’s still cool.
These recycled plastic businesses are generally more viable as primary sources of income in lower-income countries, and are money-making hobbies in pricier areas, but the shared innovation over DIY plastic recycling crosses all borders, and Precious Plastic shops in all sorts of countries are assisted by grants for economic development, environmental protection, hands-on education, and other good causes.
The basic equipment that the Precious Plastic shops use— shredders, presses, extruders, injection molders— are all open-source designs that the global community builds, improves on, and shares, although some locations also use commercial equipment. Products that the shops make and sell range from buttons, combs, and flowerpots to bricks, beams, and large sheets used in furniture and construction."

What if it is true that contemporary education is no longer giving sufficient historical and philosophical context for young people to understand their world, and as a result, they confine themselves to mere technocratic solutionist thinking ?
At Zukas, we did exactly that, discuss deeper meanings, and perhaps, sooner than you think, we'll built a ZuCiv alongside of it.
In any case, I feel I have dedicated the last few years, to doing just that, allowing Web3 communities to go 'deeper'. Not by providing them with an ideology, but with a series of patterns they can learn to apply themselves.

What is really Graph RAG?
The Microsoft research paper "From Local to Global: A Graph RAG Approach to Query-Focused Summarization" has triggered a wave of interest in using graphs for retrieval augmented generation.
In this post, @gordic_aleksa shares some thoughts and a taxonomy on RAG, and addresses the question:
How do you combine (knowledge) graphs with retrieval augmented generation?
Connected Data Co-founder @linked_do weighs in, sharing our experience working on the Connected Data Knowledge Graph.
For CDKG, we focused on the graph first. Producing a curated KG was the first step in the process. At this point, to answer queries based on the CDKG, we're not using a vector DB at all. We haven't done a proper evaluation yet, but anecdotally the results seem reasonable.

SoftBank acquires AI processor manufacturer Graphcore
Graphcore becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of SoftBank and will continue to operate under the Graphcore name.
SoftBank has acquired semiconductor manufacturer Graphcore. Under the deal, Graphcore becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of SoftBank and will continue to operate under the Graphcore name.
Founded in 2016, Graphcore has created a new processor, the Intelligence Processing Unit (IPU), specifically designed for artificial intelligence. The IPU’s unique architecture means developers can run current machine learning models orders of magnitude faster.
More importantly, it lets AI researchers undertake entirely new types of work, which is not possible using current technologies, to drive the next great breakthroughs in general machine intelligence. The company has raised over $620 million.
"This is a tremendous endorsement of our team and their ability to build truly transformative AI technologies at scale, as well as a great outcome for our company," said Graphcore co-founder and CEO Nigel Toon.
"Demand for AI compute is vast and continues to grow. There remains much to do to improve efficiency, resilience, and computational power to unlock the full potential of AI. In SoftBank, we have a partner that can enable the Graphcore team to redefine the landscape for AI technology."
We've been keeping an eye Graphcore as a key contributor to graph-shaped AI hardware.
Learn how to Leverage Graphcore’s IPU architecture for large scale GNN compute in this #ThrowbackThursday talk from our vault
Machine Learning on large scale graphs presents several unique challenges, due to the sparsity of the connections. Exact computation is often intractable on current accelerators, and algorithmic approximations fall short of modelling interesting aspects like long range dependencies effectively.
We present how Graphcore’s IPU design tackles these challenges, creating the opportunity to accelerate deep GNNs on large graphs. This talk aims at stimulating Data Scientists, Machine Learning Researchers and Engineers to think about different ways to deploy current large scale GNNs and to develop algorithms that exploit the full potential of our new hardware architecture.
About The Speaker
Carlo Luschi is responsible for the study and development of algorithms for machine intelligence. Prior to Graphcore, Carlo was a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs Research, Lucent Technologies, and more recently Director of Algorithms and Standards at Icera Inc., which was acquired by NVIDIA in 2011.
Carlo served as Director of Algorithms and Standards at NVIDIA until joining Graphcore in 2016. Carlo is also a prolific inventor, having authored 55 patents granted or pending. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Edinburgh.

Quote of the Day, April 22, 2024:
* Wherever something is wrong, something is too big.
""There seems only one cause behind all forms of social misery: bigness. Oversimplified as this may seem, we shall find the idea more easily acceptable i£ we consider that bigness, or oversize, is really much more than just a social problem. It appears to be the one and only problem permeating all creation. Wherever something is wrong, something is too big."

A course on Knowledge Graphs is nothing new, but a course on Knowledge Graphs from this set of teachers is an interesting signal. GenAI is rapidly becoming the best motivation for symbolic AI in a long time!
Our new short course, Knowledge Graphs for RAG, is now available! Knowledge graphs are a data structure that is great at capturing complex relationships between data of multiple types. By enabling more sophisticated retrieval of text than similarity search alone, knowledge graphs can improve the context you pass to the LLM and the performance of your RAG applications.
In this course, taught by @akollegger of @neo4j, you’ll
- Explore how knowledge graphs work by building a graph of public financial documents from scratch
- Learn to write queries that retrieve text and data from the graph and use it to enhance the context you pass to an LLM chatbot
- Combine a knowledge graph with a question-answer chain to build better RAG-powered chat systems

And in several pivotal areas on this list, I became an expert as well, which shaped my entrepreneurial approach.
I made this list for myself the other day, but I thought it would be interesting to share as it definitely shows the value and speed of learning on the job.
Of course, every business is different and the skills you gain as an Entrepreneur might vary — but that’s the beauty of it.
