This is going to be a really remarkable conversation, not least because the legendary Garth Nix (not shown) is going to be in on it too. May 23rd at the Sydney Writers Festival.

The God of Sleep will be out in one week!
In recognition of this, here is a detail from one of the pages. It is a cat riding on a graham cracker.

Minor life hack: I'm always looking for ways to manage my phone addiction, and somebody suggested I turn on Color Filters and set to greyscale. Makes your lush colorful iPhone screen less interesting and more annoying.
Also it's virtually impossible to play Wordle. It has shaved at least an hour off my weekly average.
Applications for the 2026 George R.R. Martin Summer Intensive Writing Workshop are open -- it's for mid-career journalists who are writing their first novels. Due Jan. 12. THE PROGRAM COSTS NOTHING. It's entirely funded by GRRM.

Just my regular shoutout to the SECRET LIFE OF BOOKS, which is objectively one of the funniest and most brilliant books podcasts around. Though yes it is co-hosted by my wife Sophie, who's an English professor at Princeton

Back when I worked at Time magazine I wrote a piece calling George R.R. Martin “the American Tolkien.” Is it true? Who knows. WHAT AFTER ALL IS TRUTH REALLY.
But in my house, when I was a kid, the American Tolkien was Fritz Leiber. substack.com/home/post/p-177…

Dr. Pullen & her TA Fidil recommend The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman. @leverus This Arthurian fantasy is so immersive Fidil tried to climb inside. At once aware of the history of Arthuriana, & magnificently new & strange, this book is a must read! #purrfectreads #amreading
A few thoughts on Philip Pullman's new book THE ROSE FIELD (minor spoilers)
Philip Pullman’s books are an anti-escapist fantasy. His realist magic tells us how to love this world, @leverus writes. theatlantic.com/magazine/arc…
