I am in an interesting moment. 2 books coming out (my novel & short story collection all coming out in the next year and a half), & I am in the middle of researching for my new novel. Also, I keep writing weird bird flash pieces. I haven't felt so free to experiment in ages.

I'm thrilled to announce that my short story collection, Of Snakes and Stones has been acquired by the wonderful folks at Blair publishing! #publishing #bookdeal #shortstories #fairytales

Come work with me! Bowling Green State University is hiring another tenure track fiction writer! #academicjobs #creativewritingjobs jobs.chronicle.com/job/38045…

Dr. Pullen & her TA Fidil recoomend Red Winter by Cameron Sullivan. This historical fantasy is a unique take on the Beast of Gévaudan. The narrator is at once sad, amusingly profane & utterly unique. Dr. Pullen devoured this book and longs for a follow up! #purrfectreads

There are so many books by authors whose work I follow coming out this fall, I'm giddy with excitement over new books by Emily St. John Mandel, China Mieville, Leigh Bardugo, Christopher Buelhman, and Madeline ffitch, to name a few. Its an embarrassment of riches!

Dr. Pullen & Fidil recommend The Reformatory by Tananarive Due. This historical horror novel is a page turner that is at once dark & hopeful about human potential, with two siblings struggling against racism & supernatural horrors, helped by their community. #purrffectreads

My first day of teaching in the BFA and MFA in creative writing at Bowling Green State University (OH) is in the books! The students were so lovely!

Writer friends, how often do you update your author photo? Mine are about eight years old...I think I may need a new one. If you live in NW, do you have recommendations for someone who takes a cool author photos?

I'm on a pedagogy panel for #AWP27 in Chicago. I hope to see my fellow creative writing academics there!

Fellow writers, if you had to pick one book that lit the writing spark for you, that first made you think you wanted to be a writer, what would it be?

I'm writing a bunch of deeply weird flash fiction about birds and I am loving it.

Dr. Pullen & her TA Fidil recommend The Changeling Sea by Patricia McKillip. They'd never heard of this novella McKillip before & were delighted to discover a used copy and their local bookstore. McKillip conjures the feeling of an old story, lost and rediscovered. #purrfectreads

I'm back from my trip home to the NW. It was such a joy to spend time in the glorious outdoors of WA and OR with friends and family.

What are your favorite contemporary fantasy novels (in this case, meaning fantasy novels set in the 21st century) for adults of the last two years?
