I teamed up with young Canadians & doctors to take the federal govt to court, given that PM Carney has gutted almost every policy in the Emissions Reduction Plan, to the point where it is no longer compliant with the Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act

5/ The most active fossil fuel lobbyists were the companies making up the Oil Sands Alliance – the largest oilsands companies behind the Pathways CCS project – with 305 meetings.
These same decision makers are shutting out civil society, including climate organizations.
4/ Government MPs are taking way more meetings with fossil fuel lobbyists. In 2024, Liberal MPs had 91 meetings, versus 323 in PM Carney's first year (though Ministers account for some of that uptick of course)
3/ Access matters.
Over PM Carney’s first year, he has dismantled Canada’s climate progress and environmental protections and has instead pursued an aggressive and reckless agenda of doubling down on fossil fuels.
He has given Big Oil everything on their wish list.
2/ Min. Hodgson took 83 meetings with the fossil fuel lobby.
In contrast, Min Wilkinson had 15 meetings his last year (still a very high number)
Canadians can’t trust Min Hodgson – who served on the board of an oil co. – to regulate the industry he has such cozy ties to
1/📣New analysis reveals that fossil fuel lobbying has skyrocketed under PM Carney’s government In the first year of PM Carney’s government, oil lobbyists had over 1300 meetings – that’s 5 times per working day.

🇨🇦 Canada's public banks are giving CAD $18,200,000,00 every year to fossil fuels.
@MarkJCarney's proposal for a new west coast pipeline would double down on this deadly & risky approach. Peer countries are moving to the renewable future, it's time for #cdnpoli to follow.
#MEDIA: New report from OCI finds Canada is the G20's largest public financier of fossil fuels. The findings raise urgent questions about Canada's energy investment priorities.

“The Nisga’a Lisims govt has held no discussions with AB and the federal got about any oil pipeline. Nisga’a citizens can rest assured that despite this ill-conceived process being advanced by AB, nothing can happen on our lands without our consent, our treaty guarantees it”

Paris took oil giant Total to court - and won.
The court ruled that Total must account for its consumers’ greenhouse gas emissions (ie downstream emissions), giving the French oil giant six months to update its climate policies & what is doing to mitigate downstream emissions.
🪇🎉 BIG WIN for climate accountability today 🎉🪇
The Paris Judicial Court has issued a landmark ruling against TotalEnergies, sending a powerful signal that major corporate emitters can no longer sidestep responsibility for their climate impacts.

From the brilliant folks @ember_energy: For the first time, every OECD country is generating less electricity from fossil fuels than at its historical peak.
Canada is at the bottom (4th last) - ie we're one of the OECD laggards in terms of phasing out fossil fuel generation

Good explainer/hot take on what's at stake with the climate accountability court challenge.
1/ A case worth watching: youth and advocacy groups are taking the federal government to court for "planning to fail" on the 2030 climate target.
As the Parliamentary Affairs Director who oversaw passage of the Emissions Accountability Act in 2020/21, I have some thoughts as it gets its first court test.

Great thread on our legal challenge of the federal government's climate plan, from the Parliamentary Affairs Director who oversaw the passage of the Climate Accountability Act

How much taxpayer money is PM Carney putting at risk, by promising support to build both a new oil pipeline & carbon capture infrastructure?
According to interviews by the Financial Times, it could reach $100bn

But tell me again Min Hodgson how Canada should double down on fossil fuel exports

The European Union’s 2030 targets for carbon capture and storage are unlikely to be achieved as the #CCS sector remains dogged by fragmentation, uncertain economics and project delays.

We have been left with no other option. When governments abandon their responsibilities, we have every right — and every reason — to fight back and protect what we love.

Young people should not have to be in court demanding a lawful climate plan. Neither should we, as climate experts. Yet PM Carney has shut out experts from his government's decision making, and is clearly not listening to concerns being raised by those within government.
We are asking the court to order the federal government to revise its 2030 emissions reduction plan so that it meets its legal obligation to chart a credible, up to date course of action capable of achieving Canada’s 2030 emissions target.
Canadians know that real security and economic growth depend on bold climate action — that the two must go together. Only 20 per cent believe climate policies should be eased to focus on economic growth
