Great to see this appointment of the former Chief Scientific Adviser as well as those of Richard Hermer KC and @JamesTCobbler - @Keir_Starmer prioritising subject knowledge and expertise in his government which is something for which the @instituteforgov has long argued 👍
Sir Patrick Vallance KCB has been appointed Minister of State (Minister for Science) in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology @SciTechgovuk.

I've created the survey! If enough people complete it I'll be able to create a vast array of terrible maps from the data. It should take less than 10 mins to complete so if you have 5-10 mins to spare i'd really appreciate your answers. Please share/like/comment to increase reach! (Link is in subsequent post because putting a link in a post seems to massively limit reach) Thanks!
Given that my follower count is now similar to the population of a small country, I'm thinking of doing a survey to collect some interesting/stupid data and make some maps. If you have any suggestions for questions/maps then now is the time to speak up! Thanks 🙃

New polling evidence from Tax Policy Associates and WeThink shows that half the public doesn’t understand a basic principle of income tax: the way that tax rates apply to income above a threshold. Thread!

🚨How British companies are bolstering Vladimir Putin’s war machine🚨 A depressing thread. But an important one. With some pretty shocking charts. Let’s begin with the “official” picture. It suggests UK trade with Russia has collapsed since Feb 2022. Down by 74%…

Now. Do I have any translators into Welsh among my followers? If so drop me a DM. Welsh-speaking birders also welcome. Exciting project in the offing.

I’m hearing more and more examples of school micro-control of teenagers. Behaviour points for the wrong earrings or socks, for not being immediately ‘on-task’ or for losing your pen. Schools say that if they control the small stuff, the big stuff will follow. They are wrong. 1/

Posters like these from @educationgovuk are insulting. They ignore the lived experience of so many. When I was worried about school, it was because by lunch-time I was rocking under a desk, incredibly distressed. 92.1% of those struggling to attend are neurodivergent.

Let's imagine that we have 100% attendance. Every child is in school. The sick ones, the unhappy ones, the ones who have just lost their parent or grandparent. The ones who are only just four and can't quite manage a whole day yet without a nap. They're all in. 1/

Happy 100th birthday to the Shipping Forecast! First broadcast on New Year's Day 1924 My initial @metoffice training included a day with the forecaster preparing the Shipping Forecast. It felt quite special to hear him rehearse aloud carefully-worded drafts to get it just right
