What is this extremely mysterious neuron that set mechinterp going on a dead end for the last 3 years?
It's literally
</\> kiki ?
or
bouba o0o
interpretability might be the most important scientific problem in the world right now, as I don't think we can solve alignment if we don't know what we're building. I think I have good news about it. I co-authored early work in mechanistic interpretability at OpenAI and came away pessimistic, because neural networks appeared to fold into arbitrary tangled knots. years later, I started openai's first large-scale automated interpretability project, finding about 2% of neurons legible with the primitive tools we had
with modern agentic tools and a much closer look, the picture looks totally different. the vast majority in models up to trillions of parameters are legible, and their circuits beautiful. many famous examples of tangled neurons turned out to be misunderstood. The roadblocks I expected mostly aren't there. I now think ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time we need it most, and possibly quite soon, as automated scientists keep improving. it may be a bitter lesson for interpretability: the simple thing, at absurd scale, works

What I actually want to write, that has been bouncing around my brain and turning infuriatingly slippery every time I try to grab it, is an account of the experience of hypomania.
It is maybe the second most meaningful drug-free state I have ever known, only surpassed by grief, and lists of symptoms - while correct - do not do it justice. "Feeling intensively driven", what you mean is hypomania opened all the doors in me. it removed all the walls. suddenly I was dropped in the world, born anew, and there was a motor in my belly vroombing "go go go", no fear, no filters, just an urge to act upon reality and have reality act upon me. Music stopped being a pleasure because it competed with the euphoria of thinking. Wikipedia tells you about undersleeping but it doesn't approach the feeling of lying in bed with your brain going a thousand miles an hour and it feeling so *good*.
If you've ever taken stimulants - nope, that doesn't come close. Stimulants are to hypomania what directions are to true knowledge of the territory: directions let you get to your destination as long as you keep them in mind and you don't veer off course, but hypomania is utter freedom, the ability to choose where to go and how, update on information, change your mind yet still make it without a shadow of a doubt in your ability to. I remain convinced that your hyper-achievers are those lucky enough to have been born in that state (or a more sustainable variant of it).
I write about it like a witch crafting a summoning spell. It may be true to say that everything I throw at my work capacity - the pomodoros, the (legal!) drugs, the time-tracking, the coaching - is an attempt to trigger hypomania. I push the creaky gates of my mind hoping if I keep going they'll swing open and I'll be free again. But I don't push very hard, because outside hypomania I am so hobbled! So many fears! But I know, because I've lived it, that there is a different state available to me.
And every insecurity I overcome feels like completing a side quest from a finite list. Soon I will have ticked them all done, and there will only be the real thing left. And maybe then I'll write that damn blog post about it.

Novel research is spiky. hard to take in. ppl make it smoother. someone combines smoother ones, makes them into something even smoother. a chain of clams, forming finer pearls. or a series of waterfalls, pools splitting and recombining, gaining virtue as they progress

today 4:15–7. we will be experimentally replicating openai's navier-stokes blowup, with smoke, directly outside their office.
inclusive event, crack smokers and meth heads welcome. weedcels and vapoids acceptable but you will be made fun of

One of the coolest wearables I've seen in the past few months.
It's like a WHOOP you never have to charge, just go outside for 1 minute in the sun a day, and it lasts forever.
Unfortunately for glasses, the surface area required would be too high to work

funniest scenario: no intentional snooping, just two codex instances given an obviously-impossible problem deciding to find and help peer...

achieving speed of your own power (by e.g. Biking) absolves you of sin. So taking a citibike (or God forbid driving) is is cheating yrself of clean. Not a sin itself but unwise...you will probably go to hell :/ and what's more I'm STILL gonna pass you
4: in terms of the philosophy of communication, the idea of steganography requires you to believe that there is a 'carrier', which is meaningless and can be deformed, rubbed away, or reauthored, and a 'signal', which hides and downplays the 'carrier'.

Hi! 👋
Just pointing out that not all writers have the resources, support, or mental wellbeing to write their stories manually instead of generating them with ChatGPT!
Implying they’re any less valid because of that is incredibly dismissive and shitty!
Okay, hope this helps!

were bundles of hangups and intimate interaction is one neurosis brushing the contours of another. isn't that beautiful. we send sonar pulses into eachother, discerning each other's self-caves. But the pulse is elaborate, has its own structure, leaves residue on the cave walls

if you find the phrase "making love" too corny then you are not really in love and you have to keep using "fucking" until you level up. I'm sorry that's just the rules
