I've loved being a regional reporter in DC, but my next steps will be a bit different: Next month, I'm joining the comms team at @FoodBankMetroDC, where I get to tell stories about the critical work they are doing to ensure families across the greater DC area have enough food.

No wonder there was a bear in the neighborhood! Sorry, furry friend, this nutritious protein is going to our human neighbors in need. #BrooklandBear
MPD is currently on the scene of a large black bear in a tree in the 1300 block of Franklin Street, NE. There are road closures in the area. Animal Care and Control is responding.

So sad to see this news. Salant is a tenacious reporter who has covered DC for years with an eye to what NJ readers need to know. He also has always been a key advocate to ensure regional outlets have the access needed to ask key questions on behalf of their readers.
I was going to wait until my last day of work but @MattFriedmanNJ beat me to it. @NJAdvanceMedia is closing its DC bureau at the end of the week after almost nine years and nine reporting awards, including the Robin Toner Prize, Dirksen Award and two NJ Press Association awards.

Fewer regional reporters in DC means important questions on issues that matter to people across the country won’t be asked in Capitol hallways and in the White House briefing room. That means less information for voters and a less informed democracy.

As a former regional reporter, the AP line here is total B.S. The AP does great congressional work. They are NOT a replacement for local DC reporters.
NJ Advance Media just laid off @JDSalant and some photographers. There are now no reporters dedicated to covering NJ's congressional delegation.

Can’t help but wonder if more members of Congress were part of two-working-parent families relying on child care, if this debate would be different
Prospects for major federal action on child care have dwindled, but the crisis has -- if anything -- gotten worse. Here's what some providers are going to do about that on Monday. huffpost.com/entry/child-car…
Scoop: President Biden will Weds. announce a White House conference on hunger, nutrition and health scheduled for Sept. in Washington. The last WH conference on food was held during the Nixon admin & led to major policy changes, incl expansion of food stamps & school meals. /1

This finally happens … immediately after my four-year-old and I have recovered from a COVID infection. 🤦‍♀️ Still very interested in seeing this play out, but the amount of faith in public institutions that has been lost due to delays and poor messaging is huge.
Scoop: MODERNA on Thursday is expected to ask FDA to authorize its Covid vaccine for kids under 6. However, it could still take until early May for the company to submit all the data the agency needs. w/ @owermohle @davidalim @katherineefoley: politico.com/news/2022/04/27…

“I’ve been winging it,” said Lewis. “There are some nights I don’t eat because I only have enough to feed them. I’ll eat whatever is left over on their plates. I just tell them I’m not hungry.” Thanks to @lreiley for explaining why food banks still see high levels of need.
Chelsi Lewis, of our Client Leadership Council, is in @washingtonpost today explaining how rising prices and the end of various public assistance programs have made it harder to keep food on the table for her family. washingtonpost.com/business/…

🧵 As we reflect on two years since COVID’s onset, we’re reminded of the many people who rose to the occasion to help address historic levels of need. Today, we shine a light on supporters and partners who went above and beyond in their efforts to curb food insecurity in the DMV. – at Washington, DC

NEW: D.C. Health has lifted its indoor school mask mandate. It's now up to DCPS, charters, day cares and private schools to decide whether to lift the requirement. DCPS says masks are still required for now inside and chancellor will be "engaging our union partners"
We appreciate @_DCHealth's partnership and are reviewing their most recent guidance issued for schools. For the immediate future, masks are still required indoors at all DC Public Schools for students, staff, and visitors.

Always love glimpses into how non-reporters encounter news. (Especially as someone who recently stopped being paid to read and write news all day)

Juror says he has not been involved in any work repairing damage from the riot. Has not talked to anyone in his office who was in the building on January 6. Only specific article he can remember was about the lumber sourced for repairing the Capitol.
