PRESS RELEASE LAGOS DSVA RELEASES DIRECTORY OF GBV STATE COORDINATORS IN NIGERIA The Lagos State Government, through the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), has released a directory of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) State Coordinators across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The directory is an outcome of continued efforts to strengthen national coordination and collaboration among GBV response stakeholders, following the landmark two-day National Convening of GBV State Coordinators hosted by Lagos State, with support from the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC II) Programme @rolacng, funded by the European Union @EUinNigeria and implemented by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IIDEA) @IntIDEA_NG. The directory provides key contact details of GBV State Coordinators, serving as a practical resource to support reporting, referrals, and access to appropriate response services for survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence. It is designed to strengthen coordination and referral pathways among stakeholders working in GBV prevention and response, while making it easier for citizens to identify and connect with the appropriate state-level contacts. The Lagos State Government encourages individuals, organisations, government institutions, civil society organisations, community groups, and other stakeholders to make use of the directory and share it widely within their networks. DSVA remains committed to strengthening collaboration, supporting coordinated GBV response, and improving access to timely and appropriate services for survivors across Nigeria. PRESS RELEASE LAGOS DSVA ENGAGES ADMINISTRATORS AND HEADS OF SCHOOLS ON VIOLENCE-FREE DISCIPLINARY MEASURES The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has called on Principals, Heads and Administrators of Schools to adopt non-violent and child-friendly disciplinary measures in schools to protect children and promote safer learning environments. The call was made during an engagement with school administrators in Education District IV, held at Lagos City Senior School Hall, Sabo-Yaba. In her opening remarks, the Executive Secretary of DSVA, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, emphasised the need to protect children from all forms of violence, including corporal punishment in schools. She stated that discipline should not come at the expense of a child’s safety and dignity, urging school administrators to embrace positive approaches that correct behaviour, provide guidance and encourage children to develop into responsible individuals. The first presentation, facilitated by the Ajoke Ayisat Afolabi Foundation, examined the impact of banning corporal punishment on discipline in public schools and highlighted alternative disciplinary measures. A key finding from the research presented revealed a significant difference between teachers’ perceptions of their disciplinary authority and students’ experiences. While some teachers and school leaders expressed concerns that the restriction of corporal punishment had weakened their disciplinary control, 92.7% of surveyed students affirmed that teachers still had sufficient authority to maintain discipline. The finding emphasised that effective teacher authority should not depend on the use of physical punishment but on the ability to establish and enforce reasonable rules, correct inappropriate behaviour, apply appropriate consequences, engage parents, provide counselling, document incidents and seek institutional support where necessary. Another session on Alternative Disciplinary Measures, facilitated by Mrs. Amelia Kentebe, introduced participants to practical and positive approaches to managing children’s behaviour without resorting to physical punishment. The engagement formed part of the Agency’s ongoing efforts to promote the implementation of the Lagos State Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and the statewide circular prohibiting the use of canes in schools. The Agency reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening child protection, promoting positive disciplinary practices and ensuring safer learning environments across Lagos State. For many children, bullying does not end when the school day is over. It can follow them home through WhatsApp groups, social media and other digital spaces, making it difficult to find a place where they feel safe. Marking the International Day Against Violence and Bullying at School, Including Cyberbullying, we are reminded that every child deserves to learn, interact and express themselves without fear of intimidation, harassment or abuse. This also means taking online experiences seriously, recognising Technology-Facilitated Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and ensuring that children know they can speak up and seek help. Understanding the legal principles that guide decisions on marriage, divorce and family matters is important, particularly when addressing issues that affect the rights and welfare of individuals. Through various judicial pronouncements, the courts have continued to interpret and clarify provisions of the law, providing guidance on matters such as intolerable behaviour in marriage, child custody and maintenance. In this carousel, we highlight key judicial precedents and the principles established in these decisions, offering insight into how the courts approach these important aspects of family law under the Nigerian legal framework. #LagosDSVA #SGBVItEndsWithUs #SGBVNotInMyLagos #AGreaterLagosRising #LASG @followlasg

JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED āš–ļø Hon. Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, sitting in Ikeja, has convicted and sentenced Idris Ashimiyu to life imprisonment for defiling an 11-year-old girl. His name will be registered in the Sexual Offenders Register maintained by Lagos State, in line with Sections 33 and 38 of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law, 2021. The judge delivered the judgment on Wednesday, October 28th, 2026, after finding Ashimiyu guilty of a one-count charge of defilement brought against him by the Lagos State Government. In her judgment, Justice Soladoye held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, establishing that the survivor was a child at the time of the incident and had not consented to the sexual act. The survivor, who was 13 years old when she testified in court, told the court that she knew Ashimiyu, who helped run errands and wash cars within their compound. She recounted how he approached her while she was outside, began touching her and subsequently defiled her. In her judgment, Justice Soladoye said, ā€œI have carefully considered the testimonies and other evidence before this court, including the age of the survivor, the consistency of her testimony and the issue of consent. ā€œI find the testimony of the survivor credible and coherent. The prosecution has established that she was a child at the time of the incident and that she did not consent to the sexual act. ā€œI am satisfied that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. I therefore find Ashimiyu guilty as charged,ā€ the judge held. Ashimiyu was prosecuted under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which prescribes life imprisonment for anyone who has unlawful sexual intercourse with a child.
