Just gave a guest lecture on Functional Programming and Category Theory to @kyptin's UNC class of CS undergraduates! 🎉 If you're looking for a practical talk on reducing bugs in TypeScript, check out the talk or the repository. youtu.be/tmVk_4oRL-Y?t=2402 l.rcd.zone/news-repo

My university just announced that it’s dumping Blackboard, and there was much rejoicing. Why is Blackboard universally reviled? There’s a standard story of why "enterprise software" sucks. If you’ll bear with me, I think this is best appreciated by talking about… baby clothes!

I’m seriously perplexed by this. The sun seems to be rising from a direction more north than south. These pics were captured within seconds of each other. Phone was carefully pointed in the direction of the road. Can anybody help me understand how this works?

Being recognized for the 18th consecutive time as the best value in American public higher education demonstrates the dedication & excellence of our faculty, staff & students, as well as our deep commitment to access & affordability. Congratulations, #UNC!
Best value in American public higher education — again! Carolina's work to make a high-quality education accessible to talented students from all backgrounds has led #UNC to top the list *every time* @Kiplinger has published a best value ranking. More: unc.live/2K4HjYV

I put my Twitter reading on hold for like a week to read this, and it was well worth it. A tech that’s maybe even more important for our future than CRISPR. Neuralink and the Brain’s Magical Future: waitbutwhy.com/2017/04/neura…

Really nice answer to the question "in layman's terms, what exactly does it mean to be transcendental? How would a transcendental number be different from an ordinary number, say 5": math.stackexchange.com/a/168…

Love this! In case you haven't seen it before, there's something similar, and other terrific visualizations of Fourier transforms, at jezzamon.com/fourier/index.h…

In case anybody noticed, this is a new key for an old account. I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I lost my old password, and wiped the only hard drive with keybase authenticated. But it's really me.

I'm ready for auto-changing carousel images on websites to be passé. They have such bad UX. When I'm looking, it changes out from under me. When I'm not looking, the motion distracts me from what I am looking at. It seems particularly trendy on university websites.

A #ecmascript riddle (HT Joey Zhou): Why does this return true? (Answer in thread.) const omnibool = { value: 2, toString: function() { return Boolean(--this.value); } } (omnibool == true && omnibool == false)
2
The `==` is governed by the ECMAScript "Abstract Equality Comparison Algorithm". ecma-international.org/ecma-…
1
In the first `==` evaluation, Step 7 converts the `true` to `1`, then evaluates `omnibool == 1`. Then it hits Step 9 and coerces `omnibool` to a primitive value, which ultimately calls `.toString`.
