After Elon Musk posted on X saying he had throttled Ukraine’s use of Starlink after it was used for offensive attacks, House Armed Services Committee member Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) says the billionaire’s ability to wield that power is “beyond disturbing to me.” “It cannot and should not be the case that a tech oligarch, a private citizen, who has that much control over our national security, who is unaccountable, who is unelected, with zero transparency, is making life and death decisions on the battlefield in systems that our service members and our partners and allies rely upon,” he adds.

Unfollowing toxic social media influencers makes people less hostile! In 2 large field experiments, unfollowing a few extreme influencers: -Reduced partisan animosity by 24% -Increased satisfaction with Twitter/X -Led people to share higher-quality news Effects persisting for 6+ months and most people choose not to refollow the influencers after the study was over. I have no idea what is happening with Starlink or who is making what decisions, but the DoW’s argument against Anthropic was that a private firm couldn’t be allowed to dictate or compromise U.S. policy or the government’s sovereign control over policy and relevant capabilities.

So the US military relies on a satellite internet system a private billionaire can turn off at will? Shouldn’t US allies who rely in it be terrified? More importantly , shouldn’t the US government be a bit worried one private citizen has the capability to do this?

1. AI written 2. AI written with human input 3. How do you know if what was written was your ideas or the AI content? It quickly becomes a stew.
It strikes me that there are three very different ways people use AI which all look the same to @pangram . 1) MEAT PROXY, letting AI do both the thinking and writing for you. 2) Coming to AI with finished thoughts and ideas, using AI to phrase it more elegantly, adding filler words between bullet points etc 3) Iterating back and forth with AI, bouncing ideas, forming a text together. All three can show up as 100% AI-generated in Pangram, but clearly very different processes and I think can become conflated. I definitely sometimes do nr 2 and 3 sometimes. Never 1, (But on Twitter I don't use AI-written text)

Just read a recommendation letter from the main advisor of a very promising job market candidate that was 100 percent AI generated according to Pangram. Don’t do this!!

A very useful report on how AI is affecting student learning at MIT. I like this term cognitive surrender, "where students fall back on AI at the first hint of struggle." We need to encourage undergrads (and all humans) to recognize this pattern and resist it.

One of the biggest mistakes in math education has been the move away from practice and memorization. We're told memorization works against understanding. It's usually the opposite. The more foundational knowledge students can retrieve automatically, the more working memory they have available to think about complex mathematics.

Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

As a statistician, I keep asking myself how all these AI people are dealing with the massive potential for catastrophic errors in critical analyses, and the answer keeps being they either didn't think about it at all, or they don't care.

This will be the way.
Sweden is committing more than €100 million to a sweeping classroom overhaul: replacing tablets and screens with traditional printed textbooks to help reverse falling student performance and sharpen focus. After more than a decade of embracing digital-first education, Swedish authorities are now pivoting back to paper-based learning. Official data and recent studies cited by the Ministry of Education show that prolonged screen use in class has been linked to shorter attention spans, weaker reading comprehension, and reduced critical-thinking abilities. Research consistently finds that reading on illuminated screens requires greater mental effort and invites more distractions compared to the calm, linear experience of physical books—factors believed to have contributed to declining academic outcomes in recent years. Under the new plan, every student will receive printed textbooks for all core subjects, restoring books as the central learning tool. Digital devices and online resources will remain available as supportive tools, but they will no longer dominate daily instruction. This bold €100+ million investment signals Sweden’s leadership in rethinking the role of technology in education. It underscores a broader, growing recognition worldwide: while screens provide speed and access, the hands-on, distraction-free engagement of physical books supports deeper concentration, stronger memory retention, and more effective long-term learning. By choosing paper over pixels, Sweden is charting a path toward a more balanced, evidence-informed classroom future—one that puts proven pedagogical principles ahead of unchecked digital trends.

Before saying “duh”/“that’s not surprising” to a study, remember science is not meant to surprise you. It’s shocking how many (supposedly) very sophisticated people don’t seem to realize this!
