I have idly mused what happens if I just randomly start dropping lakhs and crores at some point. Joining this trend.

but while I have this story to trash an incompetent vendor with some massive political backwind... let me praise UPI as a whole I was sceptical, there were techbical dififculties at first but the scale of adoption, and creating a free, realtime payment instrument was incredible to see at India scale People eg in the US cannot imagine something like UPI serving 2-3x the US popularion

I will have to admit that I ran into this before story time: don't ask me how (b/c even I don't know) but at Uber, in Amsterdam, my team (Rider Payments) owned all Indian payment methods: PayTM, credit cards (via Zaakpay), UPI, and... Jio Money Jio Money was this absolute BS piece of crap: reliablity like 98% or less (terrible), constant downtime, barely anyone used it. Our team suggested to do the needful: drop the whole damn thing. It's unreliable, no one uses it Apparently it was added in to satisfy some Very Important People in power in India Which is fine: but why did it not work? Never got an answer I made the exec decision to turn off all alerting. We knew it was broken; told the team it was broken; no one seemed to care; but apparenty it was some soft mandate to stay in someone's good graces This was 2017 or 18 so long time ago, but still a weird story. I'm most surprised by how no one cared that CUSTOMERS could not use this thing

The blanket ban on re-using single use medical devices addresses a symptom rather than the actual problem - hospitals overcharging for resterilized equipment. тАЛModern sterilization technologies have long made this practice safe and effective. In fact, top tier government hospitals and premier institutes used it to subsidize care, distributing the equipment cost across multiple patients. Ethically managed centers took explicit consent beforehand, reserving new devices for those who requested them. тАЛBy removing this option entirely, the government hasn't protected patients. It has taken away their autonomy and made essential medical care significantly more expensive. The only real winners here are the medical device manufacturers.
Union Health Ministry Issues Advisory Prohibiting Reuse of Single-Use Medical Devices The Union Health Ministry has issued an important advisory prohibiting the reuse of single-use medical devices and disposable surgical items in hospitals across India. @MoHFW_INDIA

One of the worst things about academics is when they insist that only evidence/analysis that meets their demanding standards has any value at all. All else should count as zero. If the world were run on that standard, it would grind to a halt.

The тАЬas a ServiceтАЭ part of SaaS remains underrated.
The exploits of the last few days are a good reminder of why we use SaaS. Our company pays for ~20 SaaS services. If we self-hosted them, weтАЩd now be responsible for all of the security patches this week. Instead, our small monthly bill pays for their teams to handle everything.

Peter Thiel says Apple did nothing after Steve Jobs: "Elon or Steve Jobs are way better for society than Tim Cook" "It's an extraordinary story but yes, in my telling, it did nothing new after Jobs. And there are all these metrics we can look at. It was by far the lowest dollar spend on R&D, by far the largest on share buybacks. It was just this pure, well-run value stock." "Tim Cook, he was the anti-Jobs. He was the zero charisma, efficient operator. And then it turned out, yeah, the mobile phone was this giant invention. There was not that much more to do. And then it was just scaling and branding and building it out over 15 years or whatever." "If you say what's good for the shareholders, they both can be good. But I would still say somehow, Elon or Steve Jobs are way better for society than Tim Cook."

EXPRESS INVESTIGATION Bihar banned alcohol. But a new drug crisis is emerging. Ten years of prohibition. An extraordinary policing effort. Every day, Bihar Police has seized an average of 8,650 litres of liquor and arrested 196 people for liquor-related crimes. Yes, thatтАЩs 196 arrests / day. No typo. Yet, beneath the crackdown on illicit alcohol, a more insidious trade is taking root. Heroin. Tablets. Pocket-sized packets. Vials. Drugs hidden in soap boxes and petticoat folds. From smuggled bottles to a booming underground drug market, BiharтАЩs battle with addiction is entering a dangerous new phase. An investigation by The Indian Express. indianexpress.com/article/exтАж
