Mount Sinai researchers found that people with bulimia nervosa have structural differences in brain regions involved in reward and motivation, as well as social and sensory processing, and that more frequent binge eating is associated with more widespread differences in brain structure. Published in @JAMAPsych, the study showed that those with bulimia nervosa had lower volume of the nucleus accumbens – a brain region involved in processing reward and motivation. They also had lower surface area in regions of the temporal cortex – a brain area involved in sensory and social processing. "We are excited about the next steps: understanding what these findings mean for the function of the affected brain circuits, and how these insights can ultimately help us identify better targets for prevention and treatment," said lead author Laura A. Berner, PhD. Read more: mshs.co/3ThNm4i @MountSinaiPsych #BulimiaNervosa #Psychiatry #Research
