“At 6 o 'clock in the morning, my husband received a phone call, a work call. And that awoke him, so thankfully he was able to hear me take my final breath.”
Stephanie Austin, then 35, was in her prime when she had a cardiac arrest.
Her husband Matt, an orthopedic surgeon, heard her gasp and called her name, but she didn’t respond. He rolled her over and saw Stephanie’s face was blue.
He called 911 and performed CPR until help arrived.

On Wednesday, our Emergency Service Unit responded to a person in distress on the Williamsburg Bridge.
ESU officers undergo intense training to handle these situations, but it's their compassion that leads to successful rescues.
The person was safely brought to the hospital.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the thousands of people who participated in our annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk NYC this year. This event retraces the final footsteps of FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers. It pays homage to the first responders and civilians who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and the thousands lost in the years since from 9/11-related illness and the Global War on Terror. We commemorate their bravery, uphold their legacy, and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to their memory. Your support and participation are consequential to carrying on our mission to Never Forget.
