What is the sign of every literary decadence? That life no longer dwells in the whole. The word becomes sovereign and leaps out of the sentence, the sentence reaches out and obscures the meaning of the page, the page gains life at the expense of the whole—the whole is no longer a whole.
Nietzche's description has haunted me for some time, and as LLMs and the util-ideology grows, more so
Also the man used an M-dash to make thoughts slow down and then speed up, as they should.

Here’s your semi-regular reminder that there’s not a player in MLB history who fielded the bunt play as well as Keith Hernandez
He played first base with the aggressiveness of a shortstop, and if he was right-handed, probably *would have been* a shortstop
Nietzsche "used an emdash to make thoughts slow down and then speed up, as they should."
I do so love a well-deployed pair of emdashes.

Quick....
Name "the only #MLB player to lead either league in ANY category for nine straight seasons."
Hint -- the guy who did it did it on his FIRST nine seasons.
You'll never get it.
....
DYK: Luis Aparicio led the American League in stolen bases in each of his first nine seasons (1956-64).
He is the only player to ever lead a league in any category for nine straight seasons.
In 1984, Aparicio was elected to the Hall of Fame, becoming the first Venezuelan-born player to be enshrined in Cooperstown. #HHM

Skydance CEO David Ellison says company will be spending more on content than Disney and Netflix. I actually was asking about how they plan to go about combining news operations at CNN and CBS but good to know.

We say goodbye to our dear friend, Oscar-winning actress Eva Marie Saint.
One of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, we are grateful for her contributions to cinema and the time she spent with us over the years.
Our thoughts are with her loved ones.
This is piracy and fraud (and personal violation) of the highest order.

On September 8, Jacob Coxon, a 27-year-old Anthropic employee, posted a resignation statement on X that ricocheted around the internet. He quit in protest of what he saw as the company’s suicidally reckless pursuit of artificial general intelligence. To the AI community, an Anthropic employee believing that the technology their company is developing might end the world is not exactly news. (Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI employees who believed OpenAI, if left unchecked, would do just that.) But an Anthropic employee publicly quitting in protest is.
Afterward, a debate broke out: If you’re a lab employee who believes in these risks, what should you do? Is it best to leave in protest? Or is it better to agitate from the inside, close to the seat of power? And how would the choice affect your friendships and community?
“For me, there’s quite a distinction between my rational beliefs and the things I feel in my gut,” says Coxon. “If you’d asked me to narrate my opinions when entering Anthropic and when leaving Anthropic, they would probably sound pretty similar. But in terms of the actual feeling between the start and the end, it just felt very, very different.”
Coxon joins a small set of employees of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind who, over the years, chose to walk away.
For our Cover Story, in collaboration with Asterisk Magazine, we brought together eight of them. They don’t share the same concerns or the same p(dooms) — in fact, they wouldn’t necessarily agree that p(doom) is a coherent concept. But together, they provide a candid view of the AI race and the individual calculus many employees face.

Václav Havel believed that truth was better than fear, freedom was worth fighting for, and Europe’s future belonged to everyone. He devoted his life to those convictions and helped change the course of history.
On what would have been his 90th birthday, I’m remembering my friend with gratitude for his courage, his love of our common humanity, and the work we did together to bring the Czech Republic into NATO and build a Europe no longer divided.
We also shared a love of music. So today, I’m playing a few notes in his honor. Happy birthday, my friend. The world could use more of your spirit.

What once was the peak, is now just the beginning.
Paramount and Warner Bros. shaped over a century of culture. By combining them, we aren't rewriting history — we're equipping these iconic studios with a more powerful engine. Together, we are Skydance: a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling.
We chose this name for a few important reasons. First and foremost, as we bring Paramount and Warner Bros. together, we wanted to preserve what has made each of these studios iconic. Both have distinct identities, extraordinary legacies and brands that have resonated with audiences for generations. We never wanted a new corporate identity to diminish, alter or overshadow either one. Instead, we wanted a name that would give the combined company an identity of its own while allowing Paramount and Warner Bros. — and all our extraordinary brands — to remain in the spotlight.
We have big goals for Skydance, and we intend to pursue them with passion, imagination and a willingness to take smart risks. At the same time, we will honor what makes Paramount and Warner Bros. special — giving both studios the opportunity to grow, tell more great stories and bring those stories to even broader audiences around the world, powered by the scale and capabilities of Skydance.
I couldn’t be more excited about what we’re going to build together.

OpenAI’s unlawful incidents are piling up. I’m not talking about the models, but what its executives are accused of doing to steal data to create the models.
AI is following its creators down a road of deceit, without accountability for those responsible.
