A nearly 6-story-tall mural of Jean-Michel Basquiat is taking shape on the SW corner of the Bowery at Great Jones. The work, now in the outline phase, is by New Zealand-based street artist Owen Dippie. Basquiat lived two buildings west at 57 Great Jones St. when he died in 1988.

Kips Bay update; We have confirmed that NYU Langone now owns the site at 570 Second Avenue in Kips Bay and has for about a year.
Along with my partners in government, I have written to NYU Langone requesting a dialogue with our offices and the community.

If you’re anything like me, you have been to this Kips Bay movie theater many times.
If you’re also deeply disappointed with the news that this theater may be closing, sign the petition so we can keep our beloved theater right here in our community.

At approximately 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, the FDNY responded to reports of a fire involving a four-car MTA work train at the Astor Place subway station in Manhattan.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke at both street and station level from the fully involved vacuum train operating below ground.
"Units immediately began to deploy handlines to knock down the fire, supply the train's onboard sprinkler system, and conduct primary and secondary searches," Assistant Chief Thomas Currao said.
Firefighters simultaneously evacuated a northbound passenger train that entered the station during the incident while searching both trains and working to extinguish a stubborn fire within one of the vacuum train's filter compartments.
Twelve people were injured, including five firefighters and seven civilians. FDNY members worked alongside MTA personnel, MTA Police and NYC Emergency Management to safely extinguish the fire, remove the train from the tunnel and restore service. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
