We want share our progress over the past month with some clips of us getting dirty and working with our hands in the real world. Make sure to scroll and to see the house take shape! This winter @zucity_japan is helping build a 茶室 (chashitsu) traditional Japanese tea house in the backyard of @AkiyaCollective makerspace led by resident Liechtensteiner artist Mike Heidegger who has studied miyadaiku style carpentry in Japan. The Akiya Collective makerspace had been abandoned for years causing environmental and economic impact to our area. With this artisanal tea house, we are not only beautifying the area we are bringing huge economic stimulus to our local community! We’re using locally harvested lumber, traditional Japanese hand tools, and some help from our neighbors to create the structure, walls, and shingles for our 茶室. In some snapshots from the building process you can see Mike supported by volunteers @KibaGateaux and @pocketlim - debarking beams with an axe to prepare them as the main housing posts - planing beams for the foundation as a stable surface for construction of the house - chopping a girthy tree trunk into delicate planks to use as tiling on our 茶室 tea house - Turning rough cut planks into baby smooth tiles, with a Japanese Kanna hand tool to help preserve the wood. The traditional Japanese techniques used means this wood tea house will last up to 30 years without any chemical treatments! Talk about sustainability. And what is a home without a cat? Kitty cuddle breaks in winter are a necessity! Lim-san is twinning with a stray cat we've adopted named Mikan 😼🍊 We are honored to be eligible for @OctantApp's next funding epoch to add more equipment to our makerspace and work on even bigger projects to contribute in our rural community
