If the unrest in France is a reflection that aging populations and tightening fiscal constraints make it increasingly difficult for Western governments to meet their promises to and expectations of their citizens, then France is just the beginning.
According to the 2026 Social Security Trustees Report, we can pay full benefits until Q4 2032, at which point we can only pay 78% of benefits.
The can has been kicked down the road enough times where other options such as investing in public markets (Canada) and immediately rolling back age requirements (would require years to help people plan and policy flow through) are no longer is the answer.
Raising everyone's payroll tax 4.4 percentage points (12.4% to about 16.8%) now would cover the shortfall for 75 years. Or we can raise the cap on taxable earnings (at 184k today) and lessen that 4.4 number for all taxpayers.
Social Security isn't a fund you pay in to over time, it is a tax for a social insurance program.
That took me 129 words to explain why we need to raise taxes immediately that any reasonable person would understand.
I'm begging for any elected politician to start running on smart, well thought policy explanations instead of the slop that is going on today.
I understand that the social security conversation is political poison. But I’m not running for office so I don’t care about that. Taking huge chunks out of the paychecks of young working Americans in order to pay for the retirements of older Americans who have a net worth several times higher, all to prop up a system that everyone knows likely won’t be there when those younger people are retirement age themselves, is morally abhorrent and economically insane. Everyone knows it, too, but we’re held hostage by elderly politicians who refuse to surrender power, and older voters who, as a group (with exceptions, obviously), simply don’t care all that much about the financial and cultural future their grandchildren will inherit.
