Multiple times I’ve heard today: “the UVF and UDA need to intervene to end this”. Many of the same people saying this are the same people who demand loyalists ‘go away’. You can’t have it both ways. Loyalists are transitioning, and part of that is not fulfilling a community policing role in terms of exercising coercive control, even if such control would be exercised for what would generally be agreed to be a positive outcome (such as quelling serious rioting). This is what people wanted. Policing is for the PSNI and loyalists shouldn’t be expected to step in when it suits.
